I would like to upgrade to a newer alarm system and integrate it into a smart home. I see Ring, Nest, and SimpliSafe as popular DIY kits but the reviews on YouTube are not that helpful in differentiating between them. Anyone have personal recommendations?

Back in the day ADT was great, I have no idea if they've modernized or not. I just use game cameras around the places.

    btw, just saw this: https://www.pcmag.com/roundup/341490/the-best-smart-home-security-systems

Look into local companies. They seem to have better reputations than companies with national customer service. In DFW Smith Thompson is the popular one.

Xfinity has a service with phone app. It seems low budget though. A thief could just unplug it from the wall, or cut the electricity, then that's that.

Many companies use Alarm.com as their platform. You can sign a contract with one of them, and they will get you started (Keypanel, sensors, Camera, door locks). They offer deals for add-ons or you can buy them yourself. Then you can add stuff thru the Alarm.com website and App.. If you decide to leave after the contract, you can just use the existing hardware with another company...as long as they also use Alarm.com. I currently use Brinks

    Alarm.com

The Alarm.com platform is good. I just added a security camera this weekend (installed it myself). Easily ties into the system. You can add more automation as you go. I have door lock and doorbell camera. Eventually will add thermostat.

Simplisafe fits most people’s needs and is easy and affordable. I got it set up for several relatives and it is great.

Been using the nest door bell and nest x yale lock for about a month now. Very easy to install and works great with google home.

One downside of nest people have mentioned is that it is a data hog.

I have run into a few bandwidth issues but it should be fixed after I update my modem to 3.0 this week. I’ve been using the crappy Comcast one for over 6 years.

You can’t beat the google home integration though. I can tell my google home to lock it (can’t unlock via voice for obvious reasons) and it home speakers serve as doorbells.
