I'd go with more of a B or B+ but I agree with your assessment for the most part. Brie Larson can act; I think part of her Oscar win for "Room" had to do with her supporting turn the same year in "Trainwreck" (the SAG nominates an actor for all his/her parts in a year, but I think the Academy Award is likewise influenced). But I don't know why the directors must have said, "Can you, you know, emote less?" They'll have to address this in future films. But, yes, her scenes with Samuel L. "Computer-Young" Jackson helped her out. Mendelsohn was really great. Pretty good run he's having the last couple of years. They'll also need some Carol Danvers kryptonite of some kind. I assume Thanos will have backup against her for Endgame. When you have a hero that powerful, practically invincible........
Spoiler Considering that in the MCU that she gets her power from one infinity stone (Tesseract) and that Thanos has all 6 infinity stones, Thanos is not the one likely needing backup.
I've been a fan of her since I first saw her in the United States of Tara. I like her but man the directors and script did her no favors, closet thing I could think of was what George Lucas did to Natalie Portman in the SW prequels.....
I will be seeing it tomorrow. I've seen movies where the lead was female, but the girl-power theme was not really preached. I've seen other movies that would beat you over the head with the feminism club. After I see the movie, I'll weigh in on how I feel about it. I will not hate or love it beforehand, without having actually seen it. However, that being said... I don't like Brie's tone in interviews. Her tone feels very man-hating and white-hating. I also didn't like the conversation that Brie and Kevin Feige had about having Captain Marvel NOT wear a skimpy outfit. I think Wonder Woman did an excellent job of making the lead character strong, powerful, and heroic without giving up her femininity. I wouldn't say WW's outfit was skimpy, but it wasn't full-body-cover, either, like Captain Marvel's is. I think WW found the perfect balance. Sounds like Larson and Feige weren't interested in even trying to find that balance, and are building Capt. Marvel's physical appearance specifically with feminism in mind.
You’re getting worked up over people’s movie opinion on a basketball message board. It’s not that serious. I’ve watched both films and the flaws that have been brought up with Captain Marvel are definitely warranted. Despite how much money it made opening weekend, it still falls, for me at least, in the bottom tier of Marvel movies. At this point you can slap the Marvel brand on anything and it will sell well.
James Woods, is that you? Dudes just can't deal with this s***. "Man-hating" and "white-hating"? Jee. Zus. H. Kee. Ryst. Never has anything so innocuous bothered so many.
The entire social commentary doesn't interest me in the slightest. All, I care about personally is if the movie and story are good - I understand that women have been messed over in hollywood and am happy they are getting stronger leads, but that doesn't make me more interested in the movie. DD
Way to overreact. All I said was that I didn't like her tone. That doesn't mean I "can't deal with it". LOL You make it sound like I'm curled up in a fetal position, not knowing what to do.
Aside from the pissing contest between it's stars and critics.... these movie was a total crapfest. The only worthwhile portion of the movie that truly pushed the End Game plot forward was the first end credits scene. Besides that there really is nothing to see here.
I didn't get that feeling from Wonder Woman, but I appreciate you sharing your opinion like everyone else has. It helps me and others set our expectations and gauge interest.
Ha, no I'm not worked up I'm sarcastic. Sorry for partying. It's definitely somewhere in the middle of MCU movies. I'm not here to sing almighty praises either, it was ok. A couple of their earlier movies especially were pretty bad, pretty much any character that's had a trilogy has one badass one, one ok and one flop. The nostalgia was great. There were definitely some plot holes or at best clumsily glossed over points, idk if they were trying not to blow anything for Endgame but at the same time I'm glad it wasn't a 3 hour movie. I don't think it needed to be. I don't wanna mention too many specifics because I hate people who try to spoil movies 4 days later but I've seen people complain about the fight scenes being a little short, I mean, homegirl got the power up and is about to go **** up Thanos (who pretty much ran roughshod over the entire crew for an entire movie) a couple Kree warriors ain't standing up to that. I really want to see how Antman plays into Engame, I think CM is going to be the big hammer but I've seen some fan-theories about Antman's situation going to play a role that seem plausible and interesting, Dr. Strange is going to be key imo. Hulk/Dr. Banner obviously going to play a part in Endgame since they made such a big deal of them not being on the same page in Infinity War. I think we're likely to see an end to one if not several characters, namely Stark, Rogers or Thor. Marvel has earned this though. What they've done with MCU as a whole is amazing.
The more I’ve thought about it the more I wish this movie wasn’t made and Captain Marvel shouldn’t have been crowbarred into the MCU. They really created more than a few continuity errors with the sloppy writing in Captain Marvel. Hopefully they can fix these mistakes somehow. Luckily this movie is not needed in the overall MCU right now. I hope they just pivot away from Captain Marvel.
Yeah, it's a really crowded playing field. That's my main gripe. And just because your main female lead only has the super powers of karate chops and leg sweeps, I do believe they felt pressure to have a more spectacular female hero. (Scarlet Witch doesn't count, I guess, b/c Olsen twin? I dunno.)
The merger with Fox will bring in fantastic four, surfer and their villains, but she's probably a lynchpin for the next 10 year plan. This and Green lantern proves it's hard pulling off a legit space fight scene without making it a cg mess.
I keep going back to Shuri. I thought she was going to play a major role in the MCU going forward and I actually like her character. And yeah I agree about the Scarlet Witch part. I thought she had excellent potential to develop into more. Here's a breakdown someone did just about how little sense it made to introduce Captain Marvel and change things like they did with her introduction. THERE ARE SPOILERS HERE IN THIS VIDEO
I think the timing of the movie is bad. it should have come out before Infinity war. In a time when we're fiending for the next installment of infinity wars and looking for something to push the story forward, this movie didn't and wasn't really meant to do that. It was there to introduce a character that is going to be pivotal in infinity wars but the period of which the movie is placed in isn't going to be in line with current infinity war events. I spent probably the 1st 15-20 minutes fishing for anything that might help me figure out what will happen in End Game. Once I figured out it wasn't gonna happen, I watched the movie for what it is and enjoyed it. B- for me. It was the equivalent of reading a filler comic issue. Entertained and somewhat satisfied but waiting for the real story.
I got through about 5 minutes of him complaining that she's not an original avenger and was not a popular comic book character and then gave up. He may be completely right about all that (I'm not a comics fan), but my response would be that I don't think Marvel or 90% of the people who watch this movie or Avengers care about the comics, or whether she fits in well there, or what her role was in the 60's or 70's. These movies are designed for mainstream America and a big part of what Marvel is doing with this and Black Panther is about expanding their audience to appeal to different demographics so they can try to make themselves into an even more dominant behemoth. Simply put, this movie existing is not going to make anyone less likely to see Avengers Endgame. It may well introduce new people to it, though. End result is that Marvel keeps all their old fans and adds new ones.
