    pretty amazing:

In his blog post, Abdul-Jabbar said he was auctioning with "much of the proceeds" going to benefit his Skyhook Foundation charity. That charity seeks to help kids learn about science, technology, engineering and math.

"My sports memorabilia also have a history. My history. My life," Abdul-Jabbar said. "And, oddly, since my life is still happening and ever-evolving, I am less personally attached to those items than I am to my desire to create new history for myself -- and futures for others. Much of the proceeds from my auction will go to support my charity, the Skyhook Foundation, whose mission is to 'give kids a shot that can’t be blocked.'

"So, when it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple. Sell it all. Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future. That’s a history that has no price."

This story should get more publicity then Tristan Thompson hooking up with Kylie's slut friend

I only read the headline of this story elsewhere and assumed he was having financial trouble. Nice to see that's not the case. Good for him.

Wow much respect to Kareem what a good gesture for charity. Hope he doesn't regret it later on though lol.

Kareem is still my GOAT 6 MVPs and just as much rings as MJ.

Think that for most species, the common trait leading to intelligence is the desire to collect things. Birds, Octopus, Primates, and Humans all collect things. I'm not sure that Dolphins would qualify. So that's the first thing I think of. But the second would be there are much easier ways for Jabbar to collect money for his cause then selling off items that will gain in value. He could sign cards for example. There's no cost but his time. Yes. The memories and the journey are more important for him personally, but for others, that's history and inspiration. So would you rather inspire hundreds of thousands, or finance four minds for a couple of years. I like the seeds of inspiration.

Why does he not get along with anybody? I've seen LeBron go out of his way to high five everyone sitting around Kareem while ignoring Kareem.

I think it’s a really cool gesture he’s making...but for some reason it feels kind of sad that for him to contribute like this requires him to sell off all his trophies that represent years of hard work and sacrifice.

Maybe Tilman can get some of Kareem's charity money to pay for a roster

    He’s in his 70s
I think he understands he can’t take it with him when he’s gone

Is this a slap into face of Adam Silver?

I doubt a few hundred, even thousand, autographed cards would garner this sort of funding...

This is a great story. If there were more people like Kareem this world would be that much better.

Shoot, his speaking fees are $150,000 per hour. Per hour. He is so connected he could bring 3M by snapping his fingers at the people he knows and getting them together.

So with that, now he can just add cherries on top of the 3mill he just donated to his foundation.

These kids will be good for a good decade at least.

This may not fully answer your question, but it's long been known that Kareem was one the biggest jerks to play in the NBA. Now, why is he a jerk? Dunno. But a lot of the best players are.
