I don't think Karl Malone, in a game with his team against elimination, would come out and score 8 points without his opposition playing good defense. And Grant's defense was not good in that series; it was phenomenal. And by the way, what elbow are you talking about? I don't know if we can rely on this tidbit from Peter Vecsey. But if there's any truth to it, I don't see re-signing Hakeem for 10 million. Maybe Shandon Anderson (1st year: 5 million) and Hakeem (about the same) for Brian Grant. Brian Grant is worth more than he just showed in Miami. That whole team just fell apart and never played together during the regular season; Jones, Hardaway, and Mourning all missed significant minutes. If it's true, I hope there's more to our off-season than this. I wouldn't be completely surprised to see Hakeem sign elsewhere. If we can keep him out of the West, that would be good. Guess we'll see if this pans out. ------------------
The Only thing I see from this is Maybe a Three to Four Team Deal That May Involed New Jersey , Atlanta or Chicago, I dont see Rudy taking any of the Miami Players. Where trying to move up in the draft. I see Chicago and New Jersey Looking to move down and getting rid of Van Horn or Fizer. I cant remember off hand which game in the series the elbow was thrown. Until the violation, Grant had a great season (2 years ago) and was holding his own against Malone. After the foul, Grant turned into a pacifist on the offensive side of the ball. Again, I cant remember which game in the series it was thrown, but his stats and play hit a decline afterwards. Last year his performance fell, and as someone else stated, Malone continued to own him in the post season. ------------------
one of the reasons Grant sucked in the second playoff series was that he was hurt practically that whole year and was out of shape. Brian Grant is currently not as good as he was in the first Utah playoff series but much better than he was in the second one. If it weren't for his contract, the Heat would never trade him for Hakeem, and they probably wouldn't anyway. ------------------

Did you save Ted Turner in The Nam? I don't get it." Maybe that's why they're kept separated. Probably Vecsey believes Houston won't have enough money left over for Hakeem. Why would Hakeem play backup minutes (about 18 a game or so) when he can probably muster 24 or 28 as a starter for the only team he ever played for? Signing Hakeem, of course, depends on what we pick up when we go shopping and how much Dream'll accept. The picture will be clearer in a couple'a months. Don't you have to sign for at least 3 years to be signed-and-traded? ------------------
I agree, I think Barkley is one of the few former/current player that will tell Vecsey to get a job at Home Depot, so that he can continue unloading his crap. That's my thinking too. Why would Hakeem go to LA or Miami for 10 to 15 minutes a game? He can't be on the floor at the same time with Shaq or Zo. There is no way, Shaq or Zo would play anything less than 35 minutes a game. So, I don't see this happening. One of the reason that Hakeem wasn't happy was the # of minutes he gets to play, he definitely won't be happy with 10 to 15 minutes. The only places where I can see Hakeem getting more than 20 minutes are Houston, Indiana, Milwaukee, Orlando, Phoenix, and maybe Washington (if that's where MJ & Barkley plays).
If Houston does a sign and trade to Miami it will be because Olajuwon asked to go there. The only thing the rockets will get out of it would be a scrub player from the Heat. Look who we traded for Pippen. I don't even remember thats how bad he was. ------------------
Hakeem very well could go somewhere for fewer minutes for 2 reasons- 1. To extend his career. He is already injury prone and being asked to only 15 minutes a game could allow him to play 2-3 years effectively. 2. He could play for something besides lottery balls. Losing sucks and we all know it. Granted if we sign Webber we could be a good team but assuming that doens't happen we won't be a championship team, and maybe not even a playoff team again. He knows if he goes to LA that even if Kobe or Shaq goes down that they are still a good team. Miami has alot of talent, althought hey always choke in the post-season. I also agree in a sign and trade you don't get fair value. We would get an end of the bench player for Dream, not a good player like Grant.

NCSTATEFAN: on the nickname!! go tar heels! on your brian grant post. i believe grant was bowed in the grill in like game 3 or 4. and, yes, he was karl's b**** after that. either way, i don't see miami giving him up for hakeem. people tend to forget that dream has already tried to force trades from the rockets. he's shown to be a contemptuous, honery, aging veteren who really does not care about what's best for his team. so why, oh why, would he help us out in this situation? if he wants out, i could very well see him just walking out the front door, or making his desires so clear that we end up getting roy rogers in return for him. how ironic would that be? sometimes i wonder if people actually watch basketball. why in the "H" "E" "double toothpick" would you want grant over webber?????
Yes, I do remember that. But that was when Zo was out and Hakeem was expecting to play major minutes for the team in the regular season and the playoffs. At the time, no one expected Zo to recover so quickly to play the last few games of the seaon, not to mention the playoffs. Hakeem have already mention that his game is not facing the basket, but with his back to the basket. I just don't see how it could be effective to have Zo and Hakeem on the floor at the same time. Miami have much more things to worry about than getting a backup for Zo. If Hakeem wants to be like Bill Walton for Boston (playing backup minutes for a contender), I have nothing to say. But when he mentioned about wanted to leave Houston earlier this season, his major complaint was that he was not getting enough minutes and he wasn't part of the focus of the offense. So, is he changing his mind or does he want an easy ride to get some more rings and also collect some more $$$ along the way?
Wait a minute, wait a minute. I don't need to post the link; but the Sporting News web site for the Nets mentions how that team is looking for a rugged inside player/defender. Anthony Mason is looking for about 6 - 7 million a year. Hakeem to Miami for Mason? Send Mason to New Jersey with Shandon Anderson (re-signed)? We can either keep Van Horn or send him to Detroit (with Cato) or use him to get Webber. Just a random thought. Detroit is mulling over whether to trade Brickhouse because free agents won't go there of their own free will. And I don't know what pieces New York will actually offer Detroit for a 3-way to get Webber. If Hakeem wants to leave, let's make it beneficial for us. ------------------
Clutch's response to this on the front page is the most apt: Since the Rockets have to renounce Hakeem's rights to receive the cap windfall this offseason, what Vecsey reports makes little sense. Guys, ask yourself significant questions everytime you ponder some bull**** trade... is playerx better than Chris Webber? Would playerx help out more than Mo Taylor? Would that trade threaten retaining Moochie? The Rockets will tell Dream "it's been real" and renounce him before they make any cap killing trades. This isn't an attempt to reclaim value on a 70 million dollar Pippen contract... Dream is a FA. He's more than likely in Houston... or he's renounced.
