Really hate to have to resort to this... but I just can not seem to figure this one out. When using Outlook Express both users on the computer can not send emails, but can recieve them. The error that occurs is a socket error, and I forgot the numbers and ****. I replaced the modem and everything in the outlook and email server checked out right. Any answers?
Are you sure you have your outgoing mail server is the right one? Is the company that hosts your outgoing mail server having any problems? Did this just start happening or has it happened forever? If it just started, you ought to check with your service provider.
You may have to set the SMTP server or the account type. I had to change the account type IIRC from the default in Outlook to make it work. Something in the setup needs to be changed for my Outlook to work with my SMTP server.
Try going to Internet Explorer (yeah, I know... don't ask) and going to Tools -> Internet Options... -> Connections Tab -> LAN Settings... Check Automatically Detect Settings. Not sure if you have to reboot, but shut Outlook down and re-start if it was running while you did all this. See if that fixes it. I say this because I had the exact same problem and it's what fixed it for me. Of course the simplest solution may be like Woofer said, your SMTP setting is setup wrong (like the wrong outgoing/SMTP server).
This problem just started about a month ago. Again everything checks out in my set againest other computers on our network. This is the only PC that has a dial-up connection. This is the actual error message that outlook gives me: The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.colorinteriors.com', Server: 'mail.colorinteriors.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E Thanks for all your help.
http://www.flarehosting.com/support/faq/faq_esoft_general.asp#q2 It could be that your ISP is blocking outside access to mail servers in general. Try telnetting to port 25 of mail.colorinteriors.com.* It should reply with something very close to: 220 r205-002.ev1.net ESMTP Sendmail 8.9.3/8.9.3; Thu, 5 Feb 2004 10:01:21 -0600 If not (something like "Connection refused" or timed out or so on), then "...contact your ISP with the request to open port 25 in their firewall or proxy. Or, try using their SMTP server for your outbound mail connection. " If it does, then contact ev1.net and see if your configuration's messed up (which it doesn't seem to be, but...). * Start > Run type "cmd" and hit Enter type "telnet mail.colorinteriors.com 25" and hit Enter
Do a google search and use "socket error 10051" (include the quotes) and you will see a number of hits.
I am betting that is what it is. Most ISP's block outgoing connections from other servers. If you are using EV1 , I know they definitely do this. The best way to fix it is to change the SMTP address to "smtp.ev1.net" That should solve the problem
It is located under Tools>Accounts> then choose th eaccount you want to edit and click properties. go to the servers tab and change the line that says "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)". Are you using ev1? If so change that line to what I posted earlier. If you are using another ISP to connect to then you will have to find out what their SMTP address is. Generally it is smtp.companyname.net or mail.companyname.net
