Really good signing. Definition of low-risk high reward. BOR type arm that can also function as a reliever if need be (especially come playoff time). Do we see him as our number 4 starter at the moment?
For the price, I think so. Had a fantastic year in 2018. 2.57 ERA in 80.2 innings last season, and 1.23 ERA in 14 postseason innings. Should be a high floor signing if nothing else, and if not, whatever. Worth the 4.5m gamble.
Wade had an excellent (159 ERA+) 2018 and bad (70 & 77 ERA+) 2016-17. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mileywa01.shtml
I'm thinking Strom can do some damage with that cutter. Could be a Charlie Morton-esque type signing for us.
Per rotoworld: "Miley was fantastic for Milwaukee down the stretch of the 2018 season, posting a 2.57 ERA and 50/27K/BB ratio over 80 2/3 innings...."
I'm surprised. He didn't strike me as a guy that needed a "prove it" year...I'm also surprised Luhnow didn't squeeze him for a 2-year deal with a 3rd year option. Like the addition though. Solid pickup.
It will be interesting to listen and hear if they are signing him to be a SP, RP or both/either. My gut says it will be an open camp battle between Miley, Peacock, James and Valdez for the last 2 SP spots.
He didn't really throw the cutter that much until last year, and the results were great. Offseason scouting reports have been glowing as well.
It’s possible he wasn’t getting the deal he wanted so opted himself for a one year “prove it” deal then seek out something better next year. Some risk there but if he believes in himself enough ... why not
Not a big fan. I tend not to trust weak contact skills as much as other skills for consistency. Though, I've not paid much attention to him as he's the most boring type of pitcher to me. I don't recall his cutter which seems to have become his go to pitch now. I don't understand why batters swing so much against him.
I think Astros got a great hometown deal since Miley and his family live on their ranch near Austin. Strom must have liked that cutter he was throwing last year too. Hell of a lefthanded starter signing for less than 'Stros got Chirinos. Plus that playoff experience was impressive.
So Diaz is our new Marwin super-utility guy and Miley is our new Keuchel lefty junk-balling control artist? I'm just making sure my Astros thesaurus is up-to-date.
Great deal. Rotation is set and with Whitley, Valdez, Peacock and potentially C. Perez/Martes/C.Martin, Astros have 8-9 SP’s too get through the season. Left hand starter. 2.57 era over the last three months & strong postseason outings. Top 11% advanced metrics. Hungry too get a big deal from someone next season. I’d rather extend JV now. 2020 JV Cole/Miley/FA/Valdez/C.Martin, etc Whitley James McCullers
