If you have a bad defense, you have bad defensive players.

Rivers, Gordon, Harden, Green, Ennis and Faried.

Rivers and Gordon are competing for worst. Both have similar weaknesses.

Ennis is actually passable as a team defender but can't rebound, can't consistently stay in front. Not system-breaking awful like Gordon or Rivers and probably just slightly below avg. Same for Harden.

Faried can't rebound defensively, and has very slow feet.

Green is terrible as a man defender, and has bad, late closeouts all over the court.

I'd be surprised if the Rockets won in the 1st round with giving that guard trio(Gordon, Rivers, Green) serious minutes.

Morey should've traded Gordon and Tucker for Butler without hesitation. What a decline for Gordon.

a good defense isnt about 5 good individual defenders. typically you need a good wing defender, and a good rim protector..the rest is the other guys having enough awareness and IQ to be where they are supposed to be when they are supposed to be there. house may be our best wing defender and capella is out. this team could be pretty good healthy, but im starting to worry this team wont get the develop the chemistry it needs by the time the playoffs come even after we get a full roster. also not sure cp3 ever gets back to the level he was last year.

Harden is actually playing pretty good Defense lately. The problem last night was CP and others were getting torched by Frazier and other guards and Okafor was dominating whomever had switched on him.

Man-to-Man Defense - how good is a coach?
Transition defense - someone must "stop ball"

    Tucker, Green, Paul are old.
    Gordon look overweight.
You can't expect much from them.
Ennis - upper body is weak, it is easy to push around.

This team is good enough to be top 5 team. I'd love to trade for Mirotic and Randle.

Highly disagree. Butler doesnt save a whole defense worth of defenders, not to mention, Gordon will get it back defensively. Tuck has been great for us defensively, idc what anyone says about that.

No he was bad last night like everyone else.

    Having Capela back will help.

With him, should be able to make the 2nd round for sure.

    But yes, need better defense.

But there aren't mutli-tools players just laying around.

Capela gets hurt, add Faried. Brings great energy, hustle, rebounding. But is bad/horrible defensively, especially on the perimeter... hence his playing time diminishing for the last 3-4 years.

If Faried was a great defender, you couldn't get him off the scrap pile.

Maybe Morey can pull a rabbit out of his hat at the trade deadline.

Otherwise, get Capela back, try and make WCF... best case.

I mean we looked more athletic with Capela PJ House Harden Rivers lineup than with old CP and Gordon. Defense starts with athletic ability and hustle. We are too small and slow with current lineup

I think we maybe slow on the perimeter
    and no shotblocker/rim protector

    the combo is toxic

Why do we have another vent thread about this? I'd like to see someone breakdown film and provide fixes. Id like to see more communication on the players. They arent talking in the paint and no one is playing D for each other outside of tucker. A simple fix would be to just communicate. I see alot of shrugs of shoulders from Gordon/Harden/ on missed rotations to players like PJ who is doing alot of the work...

You guys keep saying harden plays good defense but he really doesn’t especially off ball.

I’m fine with it because with his offensive load he probably physically can’t do it.

But “better than he used to be” isn’t necessarily good. What he is doing is playing it in the clutch and playing passing lanes well(which he’s always done)

Good on-ball defender, bad off-ball defender.

Last night was all about shitty effort. But I am concerned that we have not been able to cobble together an elite defense yet. That is something that MUST be addressed. We can win in the playoffs with our super slow and super efficient ISO offense, but that must be paired with an elite defense. Otherwise, it'll be a quick playoffs.

I disagree with the title. Anyone capable of playing in the NBA is capable of playing defense. Some coaches just emphasize it more than others.

Don Nelson used to say this all the time, and it drove me crazy. If your players aren't playing defense, it's because you let them not play defense.

Not everyone is a great defender...but anyone can defend or rebound. It's an inherent basketball skill...and if you have enough skill to play in the NBA, you have the inherent ability to play defense and rebound.

CP was +11 in just 26 minutes. The Rockets DOMINATED with him on the court. Your eye test stinks.
