$3 tip? I wouldn’t dare if I’m ever thinking about going back to that restaurant again. I don’t want to give someone any incentive to fck with my food.

it’s nice not having to tip when I’m in Europe, but the worst service I’ve ever received has come from there

Yes, but when Sam's and Costco pay the same, what happens to service at Costco?

It’s very rare for someone to tip more due to outstanding service. It’s probably even more rare to have a tip be less due to mediocre or even bad service. Most people have a set amount and don’t really tread very far from that regardless of their experience. Waiters know this. I go about 15% for mediocre or bad and 20% or more for good.

I don’t really like how every food transaction now has a receipt or computer screen with a tip option. I’m not giving a tip to the person who put my cupcake in a little box.

I have been outright ignored for long periods of time when sitting down before. A lot of the time I am in Europe though I have a smallish backpack with me so that probably shows me as a tourist out of town person. Although I would want me if I were American, I usually tip a buck or two worth of whatever currency I am using where I'm at.

    Write words correctly, son...

My experience in 93/94 was absolute apathy (google it)

They had zero reason to bother with us. And this was everywhere, you Millennial.

    My only problem with tipping....

I go to a restaurant with a friend. I order the $50 steak, he orders the $15 hamburger. I tip $10.00, he tips $3.00. We get the exact same service.

Yeah there seems to be a direct correlation with good service and paying your employees a decent wage you can barely live off. When your employees have to worry about rent, car payments and transportation they cant focus on things like providing good service.

Many quick service joints like chikfila pay above minimum wage. Guess what, the workers give a damn about their job.

But they don't, which is the point. You get the quality you pay for.
If you don't want Sam's level of service, you go somewhere nicer.

There's no law forcing companies to pay minimum wage.

Required tipping is stupid which is why it only happens in America. Add a service charge if it's required. I hate the whole concept of tipping.

Which is why I prefer not to tip a percentage of the bill, but for the service received.

Do you all calculate tip amount from the total before or after taxes?

I do 20% of the total which includes taxes but think I’m going to start calculating my tip off the pretax total

I'm lazy, so my default is 16.5% and round up.

    If you were good, I'll do 20, 25, 30%.
If you were bad, I'll do 16.5% and round down.

The worst service I've gotten usual involves being in a party where the automatic service charge is included.
