House and Senate term limits are you for or against them

12 years. Make house terms longer too. Half their term is running for re-election

 

I understand the argument for term limits, but I tend to prefer a seasoned legislator who has learned how to get things done, rather than an inexperienced nooby bombthrower ala the Teaparty clowns. Whatever happened to these guys, anyway? Term limits are self setting if you are ineffectual.

 

I agree with you completely. This subject is like nearly every other subject in politics... people see a problem and suggest the quickest and unthoughtful solution that would often only make the problem worse. (Like getting rid of the EC because Trump got elected)

A better solution would be a politician could not hold an office for two consecutive terms. They must give up their seat for at least one term before running for reelection. Additionally they would not be allowed to campaign for a different seat or different politician during their second term.

I'm against term limits and FOR election reform. Limit the size of donations to candidates by individuals and corporations. Make all political contributions transparent immediately after they are made. Limit redistricting to the year after the census (no Tom DeLay BS). Have a bipartisan committee draw the districts. Every major city should have at least one district within their city limits (which was a Texas tradition until the Republicans in the legislature tossed it in the dumpster, splitting cities like Austin into several districts that extend in all directions, from the Woodlands to the Valley). End the election of judges in Texas. That's just a few measures that should be taken, some aimed at Texas.

There are just a host of things that would make of elections more democratic and fair. Term limits are an unneeded distraction from the real problem, election reform. Oh, I almost forgot. Corporations are NOT people. That, and it is way past time to do away with the Electoral College.

 

Against them. They are well intentioned, but not effective in achieving what is desired here. The voters in the states and districts can throw a person out when they come up for a vote. That is exactly what the term of office requirements are designed to give these people's constituents an opportunity to do. Of course it is up to the voters in that state or district to actually take advantage of that opportunity.

A better approach is the Republicans decision to term-limit committee chairpeople. That seems to be have the desired effect.

Senate - 2 terms - 12 years
House - 6 terms - 12 years.

But also we need to get PACS out of politics........and all contributions need to be public knowledge.
