Scott Williams appears headed to Dallas, and Nick Van Exel could soon be on his way out of Golden State.

Williams, the 6-foot-10 veteran power forward recently released by the Suns, is expected to sign Friday with Dallas. Mavs president Donnie Nelson confirmed his team's interest in Williams, whose size and playoff experience are considered assets, but said they must wait until he clears waivers officially late Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Van Exel's agent says he expects the Warriors to move the high-priced point guard before the Feb. 19 trade deadline. "My gut feeling is that they're going to try to make a deal that makes sense for Nick and makes sense for them," agent Tony Dutt told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Van Exel, 32, could be a major factor for a team in the playoff race. Last year he dazzled off the bench for the Mavs during their playoff run to the Western Conference finals, and is considered an explosive scorer who can hit big shots. However, his big contract ($10.9 million this season) and recent knee problems make him somewhat expendable for the Warriors.

A report in Thursday's Oregonian said the Blazers and Warriors have discussed a deal that would send Van Exel and center Erick Dampier to Portland in exchange for Rasheed Wallace. Neither team's officials would confirm the report. But Dutt said he believed the Warriors have talked to the Blazers, as well as other teams.

"I think you can't discount anything right now," he told the Chronicle.

Williams, 35, is expected to help shore up the Mavs' frontcourt depth and provide some much-needed interior defense. He was averaging 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in 16.7 minutes for the Suns before the organization recently decided to go in a rebuilding direction. Williams initially accepted an offer to stay in Phoenix as an assistant coach, but decided he wanted to keep playing.

"He's a big guy who can rebound and defend, and he's got a lot of playoff experience," Donnie Nelson said of Williams, who won three NBA titles as a member of the Bulls in the '90s.

The Mavs will pick up the remainder of Williams' salary this season ($1.07 million), the minimum for a player with 10 years or more experience.

Can/Should we try and get this guy? I mean Van Exel is the definition of a clutch player, and we do need a good sixth man. Just a thought.

Why is this Thread here? There is nada that he might head to Houston to join his friend, SF.

NVE has a lot of game left and will be an asset to a good team as he was in Dallas last season. I wouldn't even be shocked to see him wind up back in Mavland.

I would be shocked to see NVE and JVG try to come to a meeting of the minds, let alone pull it off!
