What if we get 1, 2, or 3
    Should we trade down?

I mean I think what we need could be
available further down in the draft.
    so we could get alot!

    Rocket River
hope we can pull a Orlando.

When you put it that way, it really puts the prospect of trading for a better pick in proper perspective. What would it take to get you to part with the #1 pick in this draft?

I'd think the Rockets would be more likely to trade it than a lot of other teams. I think they don't like the gambling you have to do with the draft. The problem, however, is that to get equal value talent-wise would almost inevitably mean taking on more salary than we give out. Then again, it should serve as Cato's ticket out of town.

RR, if we win the lottery, I think the real question is "How special are Curry or Diop?" If they are probably going to be better than any center except maybe Shaq, I absoultely think you take whichever one is the best. Every year, there are really talented SF's and PF's in the draft, but center is another thing altogether. If these guys are going to be no better than say Jermaine O'neil or any of the centers in the east except Mourning, then trade down.

    Well Think on this. . . .
I think it depends on who is behind us.
    I mean . . .If we get #1 . . .
    and #2 and #3 don't need centers
    and #4 is vancouver
Why not Cato + #1 for 'reef and #4
[getting rid of cato is worth it]

This sis a tough question. Do we go for the player with the highest ceiling (Wagner or Curry allegedly) or someone who can help now ? Battier fits the bill, but that's quite a reach.

I would guess we trade down. Someone (Krause) will overpay.

BTW, the lottery isn't fixed, right ?

The Rocks will not trade a top 3 lottery pick.

The Rockets may not trade a top 3 Lottery Pick, but they will pick up someone that can have an immediate impact.

When I last talked to some of the Rockets coaching staff I asked, "Why did you not draft Rashard Lewis?" They told me that they were looking for an immediate impact player that is more of a proven commodity. They don't want a project. They also don't want a player thats future in the NBA is uncertain. Remember, it's a big jump from High School to the NBA. They want a player that had less of a learning curve so to say.

With Lewis he was a project and the Rockets did not know what Lewis would be capable of when in the NBA.

That is one of the reasons that the Rockets like to pick players that stayed for their full 4 year tenure in college. They have learned more and need less coaching. Because once you are in the NBA you really don't liked to be coached fundamentals.

The only rare situations such as Olajuwon and Francis was it a no brainer to get them. Because of their likely hood of becoming a franchise player.

So if the lottery falls in their laps they will be more likely to pick up someone like Battier than say Curry or Diop. They will be very cautious about drafting someone like Eddie Griffin also.

I would have to disagree with you a little. Rockets were in a totally different situation when they didn't draft Rashard. I agree with u that they were looking for an immediate impact player, since the Rockets were on the last leg with Hakeem, Chuck and Drexler/Peepee, so they wanted to draft a player who could help them right away and win another championship which didn't work out but was the right decision if u really think about it.
Who would've thought the Rockets would rebuild so quickly and i think this year they will keep there options open and draft the best player available unless he's a guard whether he's a college or a high school player.

    First, we dance.

Then we draft a big, tough rebounder/shotblocker. We don't trade the pick because we have what I think is sufficient depth, but we require an impact player on the frontline.

What's all this blather about them wanting to draft someone who could have helped immediately. Was Turcksan ever offered a contract? Did the Rox suffer immediate buyer's remorse when announcing the selection? Anyone know the story?

If we get pick #1 I would look at working on a sign & trade with Sac for C-webb plus next years #1. Plus we throw in Cato just to get him out of here.
That way we get C-webb plus after he leaves they will be a lottery team next year as well.
Honestly winning the lottery would open a lot of options, especially with our salary cap situation.

If we get the number one pick I'd like to see us investigate a possible trade with Atlanta for Theo Ratliff.

Thinking along that line, the other day I was playing with the lottery generator & the picks came up:

    #1 Rockets
    #2 Chicago
    #3 Atlanta

Now that would be the perfect scenario. We could play both of them against each other, assuming that both want to get their hands on Yao Ming. We'd swap picks & the only question that we would have to answer would be, "Do we want Ratliff or Brand?". [IMG]

Of course, Theo is worth the #1 pick. If he wouldnt have been injured he would have easily led the league in blocked shots per game. Also, there is no way that we will be able to trade Cato for Ratliff and the #1. That would be a huge ripoff for Atlanta.

If we win the lotto, I want Eddy Curry. Either we draft Eddy Curry or we work out a trade where we get a proven big man such as Brand.

From what I've seen of Eddy Curry, he looks like the next Shaq to me.

Then again I could also understand the Rockets wanting to trade out of that spot just because they don't want to rely on a HS kid becoming the next Garnett, Kobe, or Mcgrady.

    Point of Clarification

If he had the #1 Pick
We'd send Atlanta The #1 and Cato
for Ratliff and whatever Atlanta's 1st round pick is

Rocket River, I do. Theo would be that integral part that this team needs. He could be the one balancing force that Rudy envisions. With a player like Ratliff, making the playoffs would be a common occurence for years to come. Why does a team like Atlanta, who it seems, will be in their infancy rebuilding mode, need a player like Ratliff. Ratliff is a complimentary player, not somebody you want to start from scratch with. Whatever pick the Rockets get they should explore, first, any options involving Ratliff. Atlanta may have a rebuilding mindset, thinking anew, and a quality of young players with potential may be just their game.
