I am sick and tired of IE. Once again, for some reason my security settings were low or something and so it downloaded crap on my computer that I didn't want. It did it with out my permision. I looked for it all and deleted everything I found. Then I used spybot search and destroy to search and delete the remaining stuff. Now my IE is dead, it won't load any pages. It says there is no connection. It tries to load some page called credifind.com Thank goodness I downloaded Mozilla Firebird a couple of days ago. That is how I am on this site typing this. Anyways, I have a couple of questions. I am guessing the only way to fix my IE is to uninstall it and reinstall it. any suggestions? Question #2 is, for the Firebird users, is there a way to make the tabs stay locked as a toolbar so that they are there the next time you open Mozilla? The tabs I am talking about are from bookmarks (imported IE favorites) they are my webpages I like to have quick buttons to reach. Oh and for the record, I was trying to get some cheats for Omnimusha 2 from cheatcc.com So no, I was not looking at p*rn or anything like that. I learned my leason on not doing that a while back.
Uprising, when you do the uninstall, there is an option for Repair. Have you tried to run that? That should restore your IE settings.
Its under bookmarks toolbar folder. I think you can get to it through bookmarks--> manage bookmarks. Once you create that folder you can open all of the sites at once with the open in tabs command that will appear. As for the IE im not sure that you can uninstall it at all. Have you tried downloading and reinstalling from microsoft?
THanks I figured it out. It dragged everything to the bookmarks toolbar folder. Dumb of me not to see that.
I think if you use a pop-up blocker and a firewall, so you know exactly what is accessing the net, you shouldn't have any more problems like you have been. My google toolbar is telling me that it has blocked 1,146 pages since I reinstalled it a few months back. That thing rocks.
Yeah, my google toolbar has blocked 2330. I love that thing. Geez, I just got luky. I found a file in my windows folder that didn't seem to be something that belongs there. I deleted it and it's componets and now my IE is working....but now I am starting to like Mozilla Firebird... Guess I am going to have to bounce in between them both. I love the tabs option in firebird, and that it has a popup blocker built in. Thanks for all your input guys. I appreciate it. Problem solved. Now...IE or Mozilla....hmmm
Uprising, I'm glad you fixed your problem. It was most likely caused by removing the unwanted "nasty" from your computer by Spybot S&D(great, great program btw). The good thing about SS&D is that you can undo any change, or removal you have made with it. If you ever run into a problem like that again, just restore whatever SS&D changed, and go to their help forum here at Net Integration. They are extremely helpful there, even to people with limited comp. expertise. They will guide you step by step till you have your problem fixed. They have helped me several times. And be sure and check for updates for SS&D. You can run SS&D, and do it from there.
I use Mozilla mostly because I hate Microsoft, but also because most viruses are only written for IE.
correction: Most virii are written for Windows...not for IE per se. there are actually very few security flaws that are IE based.
Really? I didn't know that. I'd heard that many viruses infiltrate your system via your browser. Learn something new everyday. Thanks for the correction...
http://www.safecenter.net/UMBRELLAWEBV4/ie_unpatched/index.html http://www.secunia.com/product/11/ There are a few REALLY BAD security vulnerabilities listed there. Most Viruses take advantage of IE through Outlook Express. The more recent things are worms that people have to open though. There was a bug in IE that would autoexecute malicious code in an html file -- the KLEZ virus took particular advantage of that one. It doesn't have to be a virus for it to be a problem. The redirect bug could REALLY be used to hurt people (make them think they are giving info to amazon or paypal, and it's really not). But what I find IE the absolute worst for is spyware. There are so many ways to insert spyware via internet explorer (without the user doing anything), that it can be a huge problem. I always recommend Mozilla Firebird or something of that nature to my users because of the spyware issues. Lately, everyone who brings me their PC has spyware EVERYWHERE. Four months ago, it wasn't as big of a deal, but since then, it's just exploded. Not even Spybot Search and Destroy can get all of it -- that's where IE's biggest problems are, IMO. The thing is, it would be remiss to suggest that only IE or only Microsoft has security vulnerabilities. Lots of Open Source software has security problems, but usually within two or three hours of knowing about it, the problem is fixed. And because IE is so closely tied to all of Windows, a security problem in IE balloons much faster than other programs.
that is too true...I dont claim that it is just windows that has security vulnerabilities. It just seems they have the lions share of them.. I guess what I said was a little vague...IE is a integral part of windoes, so in reality...it shares in the culpability....but by and large, the most security flaws are in the underlying code of windows itself..and not just IE. Outlook Express is one huge clusterf*ck when it comes to security flaws and virus spreading capabilities.. When it comes to the end of the post....I actually agree with everything you said...especially about recommending that people use anything other than IE....but then again...I would rather they used IE on a everyday basis than use OE.. After rereading what I said arlier, I can see that I should have been more specific about what I meant...and please, dont read that as me recommending IE... If I had my druthers...evryone and their brothers would be using Linux.. Sorry for the misunderstanding..thats what I get for hit and run posting...
