The dilemma for Democratic candidates in 2020.

"How will the party and its 2020 contenders deal with Obama? Will they defend his legacy, forthrightly debate its shortcomings, or just ignore the issue entirely?"

    excerpt:

". . . a quick précis of what is under discussion. The Obama stimulus package was less than half as big as it needed to be, meaning unemployment was at 10 percent in November 2010, sending Democrats to a massive defeat in the midterms. Obama's foreclosure policy was a monumental catastrophe which crushed the wealth of middle-class homeowners — particularly African-American ones — to save the banks from their own fraudulent schemes. His corporate crime policy amounted to a near-halt of prosecutions of top white-collar crime, again largely to protect the banks.

"Obama's health-care reform, while a step forward in some ways, was poorly designed and failed to stop skyrocketing cost growth. His climate policy was timid and inexcusably slow — while at the same time he enabled enormous growth of U.S. oil and gas drilling. He also made excuses for torture and largely embraced the Bush security apparatus — even extending it in places, like dragnet surveillance and assassinating American citizens."

The political mind-reading is always interest. But, to address the core question of the op piece, since I think one of the main themes of virtually every Democrat candidate will be healthcare (Obama legacy), protection of everyone's civil rights (Obama legacy), protection of the environment (Obama legacy) to name just three... I laugh at the suggestion that they will they will be running away from Obama's legacy.

This is one of the silliest things you ever posted.

    Keep up the good work.

Actually, it raises a fundamental question for the Dems in 2019-2020.

Will they embrace the extreme leftism of Obama, or will they choose or more centrist path?

The latter is their only path to WH victory, but I don't see a candidate on their side that exemplifies this political philosophy -- not yet anyway.

Obama left office with a 60% approval rating. They'd be fools to not embrace his support & welcome any likeness in personality, and policy. I think it will be fairly easy to say that they were an Obama supporter, and think his positions were generally correct, but it was not a perfect presidency & there is alot we can learn to grow as a party of shared values.

Then the question inevitably - "what is it you learned about Obama's mishaps"

    Easy answers-

-Go bolder & simpler with healthcare (Medicare as an option for a centrist Dem or Medicare for all for a progressive leaning candidate)
-Bigger emphasis on the fight for the integrity of the judiciary
-In first two years him and Congress should have strengthened anti-corruption & foreign influence efforts to protect for 2016 and beyond.

I think those are three easy to understand topics that are fairly agreeable & don't go out of your way to unnecessarily bash a former president with a 60% approval rating who the majority of people alive say is the best president of their lifetimes.

Republicans love to dream about Obama being a wedge issue for Democrats.

Well! Trump took Republican Party to a place from where Obama’s Presidency does look extremely left.

it all depends on your bench mark :)
