Should Yao have been named an All-Star starter over Shaq? Thanks for voting! 1696 votes since Jan 29 2004 Yes 59% 1003 votes No 40% 693 votes Guess fans still want Yao to start over Shaq. Get over it! http://polls.yahoo.com/public/archives/2716652/p-sp-6
attn: all fans... China does not exactly have internet connection in each household, far from it...many houses don't even have TV's. the so called China vote advantage is blown way out of proportion. Yao may be a star in China, but the demographic that would actually vote online is well short of what some may perceive. Most chinese people in China do not have the time to do this sort of thing, at least not yet. The fact that China may lead the world in NBA.com hits is evident of the countries vast population and not particularly their united effort to vote for Yao. Yao got voted in by more fans locally. Why is that so hard to believe for some people here? Why can't a white dude in omaha or New York want to see Yao play over shaq? You don't need to be Chinese to vote for Yao just like you dont need to be black to vote for shaq... go yao! way to represent houston, be more greedy during the game!
I agreed. I just voted for Yao because that's who I want to see in the All-Star game. Just this simple reason alone, forget all the fuzz about chinese vote and vote along the racial line.
For people wondering how many internet users in China, Here is the number: China had 79.5 million Web surfers at the end of 2003, a report by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) out of Beijing stated Thursday. http://www.internetnews.com/ec-news/article.php/3299861 http://www.ecommercetimes.com/perl/story/32610.html
what Fietguy said is basically right except one thing: "many houses don't even have TV's". This is not right.
Yao may lose this vote over time, unless Yahoo distributes some paper votes in arenas, grocery stories ...
i am that far off base? i am not just refering to beijing, shanghai and canton... how about the provinces in the far north west, the west...a lot of nomadic people, a lot of people who live in simple homes... and about the internet, even at 79.5 million internet users, this is an indication of the countries huge population not in particular its unity in voting for yao...meaning, what would be more accurate way of guaging internet users users divided by non-users and say compare to here in the US. even with all those users, a lot would not, or wouldn't even know how to log on to nba.com, find the link, go through the pages and vote...this is not saying people dont know how to computers, its just saying people wouldn't be bothered...just guesses based on some loose facts...
the united states, in 2000 had 133 million people that had internet access (www.cnn.com/TECH/computing/9907/08/netusers.idg) I'm not sure what the population was in 2000, but it was somewhere around maybe 270,000,000. The percent of internet users would be 133/270=49.2% at the end of 2003 china has 79.5 mil web users. population of china is 1,286,975,468. 79.5/1287=6%
Hey,fietguy.A updated news only for you: There are 99.9% household have TV in China. BTW,many friends around me is willing to vote for Yao and vote him for sure, which is a fact I see!
Considering the growth rate (some statistics I have seen), it is likely that 6% has grown to 7% by the end of January 2004. They are doubling or tripling every year. On the other hand, ISP's don't see much overall subscription growth in the US market. I believe Chinese fans didn't vote overwhelmingly for Yao, or cast many votes at all.
