It's not an issue where there is legitimate ideological disagreement outside of the most extreme right. The fact that you have to shut down the government just to get a wall that Mexico was supposed to pay for just shows how bad things are with Trump in charge of the country.

In the end, Trump probably just declares an emergency and has the Army Corps of Engineers build it. I don't think there's any chance Republicans put the best interest of the country before partisan politics. They just don't have it in them.

Yeah but see it's a lie when you try to say the opposite. Again even one of the 2 idiots who got up to speak after Trump has voted for physical borders to be built in the past back before Trump ran for president and the DNC decided that everyone should change their mind on the subject because orange man bad.

You have one side of this issue that is supported by the people who actually are tasked with securing the border....and even most Democrats before the orange man showed up and they instinctively took the opposite opinion. The other side that is anti-border security was only supported by the far left as of just a few years ago. Democrats had no problem spending billions on border barriers and talking about how effective they are before the orange man showed up.

Literally the only reason you have the opinion you have on this issue is because that's what the current DNC talking points tell you to think. If we go back a decade, you'd have a completely different opinion. Just 5 years ago none of this would have been controversial.

Slick, Democrats voted for more fencing...which already exists..., not a wall...never for a wall.

    Nice spin though, I'm impressed.

It didn't exist before they voted to build it...because they knew and could admit at the time that building physical borders works. They were able to give Border Patrol what they were asking for. Now that orange man supports it, the talking points is that building those things are "immoral" and Democrats are eating that nonsense up.

Trying to take the position that expanding upon the fencing that Democrats helped build is wrong takes some serious mental gymnastics.

A fence is not a wall.

Also, if they were only doing it because "Orange Man Bad" then why did they accept 20 million for his wall last year? It's too bad that "Orange Man Stupid" and didn't take the deal when it was there to be had.

How could Democrats all of the sudden say a barrier is ineffective when they were all for a fence pre Trump. Democrats care more about going against Trump than keeping the country safer.

The purpose is the same, what a weird hill to die on. In this speech, Trump is calling for a steel fence....does that mean you now support it like essentially everyone did just a few years ago simply because now it's a steel fence instead of a concrete wall?

If physical borders are "immoral" why did they offer 20 billion for it last year? Whoops, I guess that whole bit is nothing but a lie to stir up the partisans who will eat up that BS blindly.

Sorry man, but the sheer hypocrisy of the position given the history of where people stood just a few years ago makes this an unwinnable battle for you.

“Mexico will pay for the wall.”

    “I will own the shutdown.”

who knows. But it is obvious that Trump's main desire is the shutdown, not the wall, or not border security or not humanitarian crisis.

Why government shutdown is so important to Trump at this moment? I have no idea but soon we will find out.

Because that's his only leverage in order to force the Democrats in the house to take border security seriously. If he caves and re-opens the government then they'll just laugh and not listen to another thing he says on the subject. I mean, I'm sure you know this.

He's decided that he's getting the physical border done to secure the border and he's forcing them to work with him.....when they refuse to anyway, he'll just go around them and declare an emergency to have the Army Corps of Engineers build it using the defense budget. Either way, it would be better if Pelosi would simply put the country ahead of partisan nonsense, but that's just never been her thing.

In fact, it is a top priority to act against Trump because the country was wiser and safer when there were no bomb mailers and Jew killers.

Because I'm sure it will be hilarious, when was that, in your opinion? At what point in the history of the country were there no bomb mailers or Jew killers? Think hard about your answer here.

Why is this a Republican vs Democrat when the Republicans had the WH, Senate and house..

The wall should have been up by now..

Also why is it the dems caused the shutdown? The shutdown is gone on 18 days and the dems have only had control of the house for 4 days...

This entire wall thing and shut down is just purely stupid..

Trump started his "negotiations" hoping for Israeli type concrete wall (30 foot mammoth construction that I saw first hand and it is a somber and visual symbol of how bad things are in the middle east) and Shumer clearly stated that he wants Statue of Liberty representing USA and not a great TRUMP wall - expensive and hardly more effective than the fences already in place. Now that Trump is realizing that he has overplayed his hand (and in a most dumb and ridiculous way - publicly taking the mantle for the shutdown & foregoing the 20 billion for wall offer in exchange for DACA legislation), he is trying to wiggle his way out of being a LOSER by wanting a wall made of steel beams (and lying in cold blood that Dems want this solution). This "fence" is STILL NOT COMPARABLE to the fence that Shumer and the dems voted for in 2014 or whenever (and which Trump has thoroughly denigrated in 2016 as not even close to what he wants).

Good on JayGoogle for calling you out for suggesting that Demorcrats at any time had same ideas as Trump with regards to the wall.

ps. definition of "crisis" involves significant changes precipitating an obvious need for action - look it up. There are no significant changes to speak of and therefore shumer and pelosi are absolutely right to say that this is a manufactured "crisis" of orange man's making at the expense of ton of fellow citizens who are likely already living from check to check. The orange man was also the guy who created a real "crisis" by separating families (he now blames Sessions for it) - it's a proof that he doesn't give a flying f*ck about plight of people he is effecting. He just cares for political appearances.
