I need ideas, looking for someplace new, off-the-beaten-path, inside the loop preferably, though distance doesn't really matter since I'm "temporarily retired" from the workforce. Any type of cuisine will do.
I'm out of town, but if I was in Houston, I'd hit the following places... 1) 59 Diner (Awesome chili cheese fries) off 59/Greenbriar 2) Panda Garden (Great chinese food) Weslayan 3) Houston's (Great Prime Rib Sandwich/Potato Soup) - Kirby 4) Zydeco's or Treebeard's (Awesome Cajun) - Downtown All of this is making me hungry...I'll be eating my ham and cheese sandwich thinking of you getting your grub on...
Go to the Hoa Binh center on Travis, there's a small deli there. You can fill your belly with authentic, freshly made Vietnamese food for under $5.
Kanomwan. The Thai Nazi makes the best Thai food in the world. http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/restaurants/reviews/rsv0426.asp Make sure you get some Thom Kha Gai
Buck- Try Cafe Red Onion on Kirby and 59. They have the best pineapple salsa in the world! Chicken Belize is amazing too. You should be able to get in and out for about $12.
Very solid suggestions so far: Frenchy's is never too far, coma, ate there last week. Hoa binh deli (can't remember the name), but is that the place that makes the kickarse vietnamese sammiches? Have been to all the places but Kanomwan...it is in the early lead.

OK.....I was about to say, "Yah.....I've always thought that too.....especially since that day when you talked about cooking crawfish. (That was probably about three or four years ago though.....why I remember a tidbit like that from so long ago, I don't know....but I usually remember just about everything when it comes to food). But......then I started thinking about what you wrote.....what did you mean, exactly? We ARE sons from different mothers.
I think he meant to say, "Brothers from different mothers." Hmmmmm........screwing up that saying is something I'd do.
Just got back...Kanomwan f*in rocks - Thom Kha Gai, cashew chicken w/ red chili sauce, pad thai, crispy eggroll. My new favorite Thai place in town.
