With my outspoken attitude on the drug war, it would not surprise me in the least to find that I have been flagged. Then again, I have had letters to the editor published, have published articles for news sites, and have continually pointed out the hypocracy and racism rampant in the drug war.

If that is enough to get me flagged then I am darn happy to be one of the flagged ones.

After reading this thread I've changed my mind. President Bush is the wisest, strongest, handsomest person who has ever been president of the United States. Obviously Iraq needed to be invaded asap as it was an immediate threat to the US. Thank JC and all the saints (does that make me a non-Christian?) above for providing us with such a good Christian- man to lead us in our hour of need. Amen.

No offense, MacBeth, but this is the dumbest thread I have ever laid eyes on.

LOL!! Even I laughed at this one!! :)

I actually thought about you last night...I went to a Bible study group last night with some guys roughly my age...and we camped out on the subject of false patriotism and, in our eyes, the idolatry of equating America and Jesus Christ..and the free pass from many in the church for W. simply because he professes Jesus Christ...that everything he does MUST be right merely because he's a man who makes claim to Christ. We were talking about how we all want to puke everytime we get a mass email that expresses that sentiment.

Uh, no but come on. This is just a basketball website. I wouldn't think it would be real high on the governments watch list.

Ok, I get your point, but think of this:

    1) From what I understand, the security systems in place aren't specific to types of web sites, but are in fact designed to key in on specific phrases/words when used in any internet correspondence ( ie not republications of media, etc.).

    2) When you consider that the CIA and FBI have identified the internet as a primary source for terrorist communication, recreuitment, and propoganda, and that same was part of what helped them facilitate 9-11, I suspect that they would err on the side of too much than too little, don't you?

    3) Despite the overall heading of this site, the topics discussed in this forum on a daily basis, when you consider number 1, would have to draw some attention.

    4) Assume the preceding, and add in what we know about past govt. attention to citizens activities when they could get away with it, add the climate and the technological capacity for data ccumulation....

I am not saying I am certain we have been monitored. I don't know enough about it. But unless you do, to say for certain that we haven't is to be a polyanna, and place undue faith in the dicsrimination of our government, IMO.

And one would think a bunch of no-name screenwriters wouldn't either.

Personally, I couldn't care less if I'm some "list." I'm an American, and free speech is stronger and more powerful than anything some spineless opportunistic government can bring down on its citizens.

If a government cracks down on dissent and free speech, then they don't trust democracy. And, over time, the democracy's people will refuse to allow its government slouch toward such tyranny.

Right *always* beats might. Sometimes it takes a while, but the spirit of freedom will always prevail. Always.

This is one of the most optimistic things one can say about politics in general.

It's completely wrong of course, but still optimistic. ;)

The most notorious network, monitoring mobile phones for keywords such as "greenpeace".

    Echelon

Total Information Awareness was killed by congress, but basically spun off into a bunch of other b*stard versions, as detailed in the most recent edition of Wired. The list they provide includes:

    Capps II
    MATRIX
    NORA
    Acumen
    NIMD

which are all various ways to scan every database in existance in order to build some sort of profile about you for all sorts of reasons related to security.

    Uh...

Because I don't know that much about it...as said in your quote. Because I am wondering if others do...as alluded to in your quote...and because I don;t place undue faith in our government, and as such, short of contrary information, believe it is quite possible, and am wondering what others think. Is is that confusing?

    Me too.

However, if there was a "report to the Attorney General" link, I'm sure there would be some flags.

I think I've mentioned this before but some intelligence bureau of the US (not sure whose jurisdiction it would be really) has a file on my father. He was in the Navy in the mid-60s as an intelligence officer (cryptography stuff). They wanted to keep him on when his tour was over, but he was contemplating marrying a French woman (my mother). The Navy wouldn't let him keep such a sensitive position though if he married a foreign national. So he left and got married. But they keep or at least kept a file on him. Don't know what that suggests about the current system. My guess is that you can be flagged without it being any sort of big deal. If they open a file on you so they can keep track of a particular person, that's a bigger deal.
