Here's a good response to tell hata's who claim Harden is only trying to get fouled on his drives.

This covers the years since Harden became a starter with the Rockets, compared to same age for Kobe.

i'm trying to visualize jason mcintired digesting all these numbers but it's just not happening. he laughs that harden is barely top 10 because he's never played defense on any possession and goes back to spitting out curry-lebron and lebron-curry in a cricked neck shaking seizure

nba has changed, and continues to change. I get the stat and it's cool, but in context, Kobe(in particular Frobe), would have attacked with even more success in this nba. I can't even fathom what a young MJ relentlessly attacking the rim would have done in this NBA.

It’s not a comparison to Kobe, it’s a way to refute that he doesn’t drive to score, but rather to get fouled.

MJ played in the easy era of Illegal Defense rules. He never had to face guys zoning behind the primary defender.

This isn’t to say Harden is wothy of comparison, but this is to explain why Harden has learned this deadly Step-back three. You can’t drive as freely and relentlessly as Jordan and AI did, thx to the Illegal Defense rules, when Pops simply takes the drive away by bringing Duncan over to zone behind Kawhi, like he did to Lebron and Miami in ‘14.

Lebron gave up in that series, because of that Duncan zone, among other Jordan-era Illegal Defenses.

Also, keep in mind that Jordan only drove as much as Harden before PJax brought the Triangle. After that, the triangle itself clogged the lane, but allowed Bulls to feature MJ in mid Post with Pippen as Point Forward at the key. He attacked from 19’ in, and learned that fade-away jumper which Kobe copied, while Harden has perfected the step-back three.

But how many layups have Kevin Martin and Jeremy Lamb hit?

or iverson. he was so ahead of his time as a pg who scores 30ppg. they needed to move him to sg at 6'0" because they thought there should be more ball movement.

iverson's handles, sheer speed/quickness, scoring ability in the paint, in today's NBA would be a monster even more than he was.

AI feasted on Illegal Defense clear-outs. Those don't exist anymore. I'm a huge AI fan, but he played against defenses that were forced to give him space to drive.

I regularly see more bodies in the paint in a MJ or Ai video than i do a Harden video especially when you consider most of Hardens drives are from the top of the key only where Ai and MJ attacked from all angles

Would love to see Iverson play Moreyball. His efficiency would go up without those deep 2s(like most of the 2k players but more than them, AI attacked a lot more than them too and got to the line Harden like without moreyball). Plus his shooting form and ability to get separation for a shot shows me if he really worked on his 3, he'd easily be a better player today. Just no way anyone would be as durable as Harden has been though.

Like all aggressive players who operate in the paint a lot, Harden gets fouled. He drives into the bodies of moving defenders. He tempts guys to swipe at the ball, which they do, often clubbing his forearms. No witchcraft rule-bending there.

As for the perimeter fouls, the defenses are all keyed toward stopping Harden at any cost, and they are regularly over-zealous in their pursuit of that. Again, no hocus-pocus involved.
