Interesting evaluation Houston will likely have to make: are NRIs more valuable than potential optionable waiver claims?
Defensive abilities that Martinez does not offer. Versatile player around the IF. Couple him with the right prospects and I think they’d listen.
Uh, ok. You and I have vastly differing opinions on White's defensive "abilities" at anywhere other that 1B, pretty much just like Martinez. White can be shitty at 3B, while Martinez can be shitty in LF/RF. Plus they can't use him at DH where he belongs.
He’s definitely below ave to ave at this point, but he has extensive experience at 3B, 2B and 1B. That’s more than Martinez can offer. I’m not saying they would trade Martinez straight up for White. I’m just saying he would be a good return on top of a nice prospect haul.
Viewing White as more than an emergency option at any position other than 1B is ridiculous. Would be shocking for any NL team to show much interest in White.
He’s got 2 more mlb innings at 3B than he does at pitcher. He’s logged 21 innings at 2B (none in 2018). His time spent moving around the infield in the minors was MUCH more a result of him being on stacked teams with his primary position blocked than it was his ability to play 2B/3B/SS. He’s got 36 total mlb innings across 2B/LF/3B (11 games) compared with 886 innings at 1B (119 games). So over 90% of his big league time has been spent at 1B. I really wish this site had an ignore feature.
Just saying...he's played a bunch of 1B in the majors, and been shitty. He's played exactly 25.2 innings at 2B/3B in the majors, and been shitty (given he stood at 3B for 4ish innings and never had a ball hit to him that he got credit for). I know they have tried him out in AAA and such at various positions but that means nothing other than them trying to get him/others ABs and maybe discovering some of this "versatility" you're talking about. He is horribly slowfooted and inflexible at 1B, how that makes you feel he can play elsewhere is intriguing.
