Are there any updates on the Dream sculpture project that was supposed to be out front of TC?

Hell, are they still even doing the project?

Or has it the project been scraped so Dream can honor his religion's wishes?

Tim, Clutch, Jeff,........hell, someone, ANYONE! If you know the low down, the 411, can you please clear this mystery up?

    Thanks...:)

I would prefer a Calvin Murphy one decked out in a faux gold suit. He's one of the few reasons why I still watched the games even when the Rocs sucked from 2000 to '02.

How about a wall. One where the statues project out of a wall to honor all our players and then the great calls of Rockets history can be heard as you walk past. Blind people can feel and touch it.

It's not happening...It's over, done, finito, gone, finished, terminated, through, see ya later alligator, not happening, hasta la vista baby, not a snowball's chance in hell....

We're going into the Kelvin Cato winning the three point shootout chance of Hakeem getting a statue of himself outside of Toyota Center...Justin Guarini accepting his Oscar for best actor and his Grammy award in the same year...Michael Jackson, Jenna Jamison, and Anna Nicole Smith all being guest stars on Seasame Street...Me and ZRB both predicting victories in the same Rockets game thread...

Let me know if you need any more clarification on the issue...

Do you have a link or state where you heard this from please. Last I heard on Sports Radio 610, Olajuwon was consulting with spiritual leaders to see if he is allowed to have such a statue made of him b/c it might be construed as a "human" being worshipped which might be against Islam beliefs. Peace.

I heard that the current Rockets are actually doing the sculpting...

They would have had it finished by now if they didn't keep turning the chisel over...

Now THIS is an amazing idea. Done right, it would send chills down everyone's spines as they walked past. Imagine something like that leading to the entrances.

If a statue is no-go, then murals would be cool. A Dream shake, Clyde gliding, Calvin taking a jumpshot, Ralph Sampson's tip-in, Rudy T on the sidelines... whoa.

Rockets to Honor Olajuwon with Monument at Toyota Center
Monument to be Unveiled April 11

Created: Thursday, 14 Feb 2008, 5:57 PM CST

The Houston Rockets will unveil a monument April 11 honoring the greatest player in franchise history, Hakeem Olajuwon.

The artwork, two years in the making, will be placed in front of Toyota center for Rockets fans to admire and remember.
"It's a wonderful monument to the greatest player in the history, I think, of Houston sports and one of the greatest players of all-time in the NBA," Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said.

Olajuwon is thrilled with the Rockets gesture to honor his career.

"I am so grateful for their thoughtfulness to honor me," Olajuwon said. "It can't be any higher than that. I feel so humbled. I mean, like, 'Wow ... I mean that much.'"

The Phoenix Suns will play the Rockets April 11 which means Shaquille O'Neal will be at Toyota center when Olajuwon is honored.

Olajuwon is expected to be named Friday as a finalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He has a sparkling resume that includes being named NBA MVP in 1994. Olajuwon led the Rockets to a pair of NBA Championships and was Finals MVP both times. He is also a 12-time NBA All-Star.

The project to complete a monument honoring Olajuwon, whose nickname is "The Dream," was not easy because it had to comply with his Islamic beliefs.

"It took a long time, us sort of negotiating with Dream about what he would accept and what he wouldn't accept," Alexander said. "What we finally arrived at is something that we think is beautiful but (is) acceptable to Dream."

The Rockets tribute to Olajuwon is being built around his jersey and his accomplishments. It will not include a picture or likeness of himself.

"A statue is against my faith and they recognize that and we worked to be creative," Olajuwon said. "What are the things that we can do that can make it more acceptable and still accomplish the goal? I think we accomplished that."

Houston artist Eric Kaposta designed the monument. He acknowledges working within Olajuwon's parameters has made it a tough project.

"He doesn't bend on what he sees as following his religious beliefs," Kaposta said. "So we were kind of put into a small area of what we can do, not my normal type of thing.

"Because of that, it's challenging. So I have to make something that I think is going to be outstanding with these parameters that only allow me so much latitude."

Alexander said commissioning the project that will produce the monument to honor his greatest player was an easy decision.

"You saw what Chicago did for Michael Jordan. You saw how meaningful it is for the player. This player was as meaningful for this franchise as Michael was for that franchise," Alexander said. "We obviously wouldn't have had two championships without him. Wouldn't have been in the playoffs so many times. He's one of the truly great athletes and players in the history of the game."

Alexander believes it is important that Olajuwon's name and his contributions to the franchise are never forgotten.

"Definitely helps his immortality," Alexander said. "Definitely prolongs his greatness, forever almost. That people will say 'Who was that?' Somebody will say that's the greatest player in Rockets history."
