If you dont subscribe to cable then you have nobody to blame but yourself. Cable is the future in the TV sports. You have to come to grips with it.

I agree that there needs to be more weekend games. ABC will give us one game, but almost never the back to back games that NBC used to do. That is my only gripe.

I love the Wed/Thur/Fri games on ESPN/TNT. If only my cable company offered NBA TV then I could get even more games! :(

I made 80,001 last year. After taxes, my Acura payments, the house in The Woodlands, Golf lessons, and of course the Wife that doesn't work. I have no money... especially for the NBA. Screw you Howard Stern!!!!

80,001? I guess hounding your boss for that raise really paid off. :D

There are PLENTY of ways to get a bigger refund check. Before you go out to eat, tell somebody you're dining with to ask you about work while you're eating...BAM, instant business dinner!

    Get a Honda

I hear the Heights has pretty nice houses

That's what a handicap is for!

Well, I'm not quite sure why you're directing your anger at the host of a nationally syndicated radio program, but hey, whatever gets you through the day... :D

I think I may have pissed off the under "20" crowd:D

Anyways, great reply Nick, Jelanit and Dave.

The point of this thread by those who didn't take the sarcasm too well was that yes, although the NBA does need to make money, merely televising the games on cable relegates the games to the middle class, and those who cannot afford cable TV (those on welfare, living in the projects, the ones who play the game too) will never be able to see their heros, like how I did, and most of you did, during the CBS/NBC era.

Not that I am being cheap about purchasing cable, but I don't ever watch TV unless there is a game on.

The point of this thread is/was to reflect on how the games used to be televised and were fun, and most kids would be home to watch games on regular TV.

Remember, most of the poor cannot afford cable TV, and I having grown up in that bracket can attest to how fun it was on regular TV.

Anyways, that's why the thread stated specifically "Those under 20 don't reply" because look at the flames I am getting by those who don't remember:D

Oh yeah btw, Yaopao is my *****;)

Heydude you are right. They are a great duo. However, that wasn't the point.

The point is the weekend game telecasts that made it "feel" like basketball season was in session. Like the old NBC weekends.

    Val,

You must be staying in some cheap hotels if they don't carry ESPN or TNT. Otherwise, if you're never home because you work late, then I feel your pain (even though the cable deals have allowed more national broadcasts on a weekly basis rather than public broadcasts of weekend only games). My beef is with the NBA audio pass. In the summer, I pass time at work by listening to baseball games. For all the games of my favorite team, I pay $15. That's 162 games!! But with basketball, they expect you to $10/month!! That's $60 for only 82 games. And basketball on the radio is nothing like baseball on the radio. Easily the biggest ripoff by the NBA.

Derrock. THat was hilarious! Yeah baseball games are totally different on the Radio. Baseball was meant for the radio, and you have the announcers who have been doing the games for a while calling the games (ala the late harry carry).

Basketball isn't the same on radio.

AH! I'll quit my b****ing! I'll never win. LOL

I have to agree that NBA coverage now is ridiculous.

I finally had a weekend off, and all I wanted to do was watch an NBA game during the afternoon (remember the afternoon doubleheaders on NBC). Much to my chagrin, there were no games televised.

As annoying as Bob Costas was at times on his NBA coverage (then again just about every anchor on that show rode Jordan's jock), Julius Erving, Mike Fratello, Bill Walton (after his newfound appreciation for Hakeem) and Marv Albert were great commentators. Not to mention Peter Vescey's insider information, before he decided to start throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks.

Now we are stuck with Tom Tolbert, Greg Anthony (isn't that bad), Tim Legler (who talks way too much trash for as sorry as he was as a player) and the most annoying commentator I've ever seen in Steven A. Smith (does this guy really think he needs the attitude and obnoxiously loud voice to get his point across), I used to see him on BDSSP when he had a much lower toned voice. Ernie Johnson, CB, Kenny and Magic are pretty good on TNT's coverage so I really have no complaint with them.

All in all I'm too young to remember CBS's coverage of the NBA, but NBC was light years ahead of ABC. Hel, even CH 51's coverage is better than ABC, and thats just a shame.

All I will say is this:

Mike Tirico: super Laker jock rider and basically the WORST THING to be on television since UPN's inaugural year.

For those of us over 20, way over, I remember how tough it was getting enough guys out to the Y for a game -- until the network telecasts started after the January 1 Bowl games.

Then, everyone was skyhooking, and finger rolling, and the crowds came out.

If it weren't for sports I might not take Cable. But that's where most sports broadcasting is, and me.

I agree with Val. Moving the NBA games to cable means making it a middle class entertainment. That's bad. Pro sports are moving to the higher and higher classes. Look at how arenas and stadiums are built now. They are geared toward making money out of rich people with all those suites and stuff.

Making money out of rich people is all good. But you've got to retain the lower class fan base. Football is on cable too. But it doesn't reduce air networks coverage. Reducing NBA aired games is just turning the back on the kids who can't afford cable, let alone a $30 minimum price game ticket.
