Was at the game too and thought it was VERY clever. I did not know it was the first time they did that since I was late for the Wolves game. I enjoyed it alot and it caught alot of people by surprise. As for someone getting a video of it, I do have a digicam with Quicktime recording, but the quality is low. Will try to get a vid at the Kings game next Wed.
Dave2000..that would be cool...check the sound too and repell from the rafter to get close to the speaker for the WHO concert series
I have seen it and it is a great improvement from the junior high school pep rally that we had at the beginning of the season. It actually got me pumped up for the game!
Anyone who ever complains about a Rockets home game's presentation should go to Conseco Field House. That place is a freakin' bore.
To most around here, this should NOT be new news. But with questions like this one above, well.....I just felt I had to remind a few......... That crappy announcer has something to do with new in-game music and cuts you hear during Rockets possessions for that crappy announcer in none other then T-Grey from 97.9 the Box. This is partly why you here so many NEW and fresh rap and hip-hop cuts played more then at any other time or any other venue in the NBA. And hell, that is way better then other arena's around the NBA. Try Dallas for example, where they play "OLD" crap over the speakers that ranges from Jagged Edge to Dave Mathews Band. Talk about needing to update your music collection.........And the announcer isnt that great there either. So while T-Grey might not be the best PA guy the Rockets have ever had, atleast he brought some of his music to liven up the NBA party a little.
Fine... keep T-Grey as the music selction guy, but get somebody who SOUNDS better during the game. Its especially troubling that everybody who supports the PA announcer is doing so for reasons BESIDES his ability to announce during the game. (Tim's mention of how he handles promos, and now tigereye's note of how he uses fresh music). Personally, if I had the choice between somebody who sounds professional, and somebody who chooses good music/handles corporate promos, I take the first option EVERY TIME. Plus, who cares if the PA isn't as good in other arenas, or that it doesn't really matter... the only reason we never noticed it before was because we had somebody who had a deep/rich voice, sounded energetic, and was completely proffesional. Its no coincidence that people started finding fault w/ the new guy... its because he's that much worse in his pure ability to have a great sounding voice, pronounce names, and interject drama (definitly noticeable in his lack of a heroic salute to Yao after he left the NY game).
The Knicks match-up was my first live game at the Toyota Center and I couldn't have been more impressed with the whole production. The Rocket was cool, they played all kinds of music and it all sounded great. The timeout skits were funny although a bit hokey. We had a blast. I did miss Turbo though! Sad but true though, the bar area for the lower bowl is so nice it is very tempting to miss some live action to hang out there. It's no wonder those seats look vacant.
Aww, I wanna see the Rockets into! The only one I ever get to see live is the Cav's stupid entrance that hurts my eyes.
Now I love the intros....one of my favorite Who songs.... Any coincidence that it's " Won't get fooled again" ?
Funny thing is............. During the Knick/Rocket broadcast on ESPN, Bill Walton brought this up. He said, "there are so many things to do in this arena, that fans cant concentrate on the game"........or something to that effect, cant remember his exact quote........It was the ESPN crew's very first visit to TC and Walton was so impressed, he described the place as, " the best BasketBall arena in the Western Civilzation!"
He's only saying that because he's begging for a position with the Rockets. With Rudy 'leaving', Walton has no more contacts with the team and must be quite upset that he wasn't named Big-Man Coach.
Or ... maybe it's just because we do have the best arena in the league. (Although Walton's gift for hyperbole may strain his credibility sometimes... heh.) Tim
Tim, thank you for upgrading the intro show and in-game music!!!! This is very good news. Back in 1996 I lived in Alaska. They have a Semi-Pro Hockey league there. And I went to a game once. And let me tell you, they put on one of the best pre-game shows (player intros) I've seen!!! (Sullivan Arena or Ben Boeke, I can't remember). The music was modern, up-tempo, and in rhythm with the lights. It was cool! Like montgo said. It's awesome when the lights and pyros are in rhythm with the downbeat. And that's how it was (minus the pyros). The cool thing, is that you don't even have to like the music for it to be a exhilarating experience. I mean, most people like the IMAX experience even if they don't like the music that plays on those shows. And from what montgo said, it seems like the Rockets scoreboard/music board is even better (deep bass; afterburners from Rockets)! I'm sure you guys have a sound system built into that thing that is way better than a semi-pro arena could afford. By the way, how many watts does that thing have!?
To be honest, I have no idea, although I'm sure our tech guys could recite it by heart. My only question while it was being built was whether the bass would be big enough to shake the seats. They said yes. I was happy. Tim
