I'm helping a non-profit implement Google G-Suite for Business for about 20 employees/volunteers who have some need for sharing docs/calendars, but not much. But they have a high-level of security requirements for use of G-Suite Apps...starting with zero visibility externally, even via user error. The users have low level of tech experience and rotate out often. They will only have two (maybe three) Groups with different roles/security needs. (The Board Members are one group, and the Committee members are another.) Since I'm doing this for free, I admit that I'm trying to lessen time to RTFM and time performing trial testing, so if anyone could help with my learning curve (especially security gotchas), be much appreciated. If you have Admin experience with G-Suite for an organization, I'd love to chat you up with some questions, maybe via a Meet/Hangout screen sharing call. You'd greatly help a non-profit who serves over 5,000 people of need in the Boulder community. tia
From my experience, and supportability perspective like you're seeking, G-Suite is a nightmare. I've had to migrate many medium and small businesses away from G-Suite to Office 365 as they've grown because of the limited administration capabilities of G-Suite. Also, something to keep in mind that was a crushing limitation of G-Suite for several of my customers was migrating existing email to G-Suite is terrible... as they limit each account to a maximum of 1GB of IMAP transfers per day. It took me weeks to migrate some of the larger mailboxes to or from G-Suite for customers. Truthfully, this limitation is moronic and big enough of a problem alone to avoid them at all costs. It makes it nearly impossible to migrate large organizations away from them in the future.
This won't be a problem. The team is way too small for standard supportability issues, so advice on that isn't what I'm seeking. Trust me, the supportability of alternatives (Dreamhost webmail) is worse. I also got them G-Suite for free. If you could pause for a second, and squelch the comparisons to Office 360 (despite everything you saying making sense for other companies), do you have G-Suite admin experience that I could tap into: Sounds like you mainly having migrated Google to Office 360?? bottomline: All they really needed was the excellent GMail service to take over their business email addresses from rinky-dink Webmail services. Plus, the Meet/Hangout video conferencing is another huge Win, so far. They don't really need docs or calendar, but I'm trying to investigate if their small team of just 5 Board members (and potentially 14 committee members) could securely use them, as they want to.
Pretty much everything available resides in the Security Center - https://gsuite.google.com/products/admin/security-center/ What level of options is based upon the subscription type. Enterprise is pretty much the only thing I'd recommend to those who want security - https://gsuite.google.com/pricing.html
Unfortunately, neither your Office 360 or GSuite Enterprise advice helps me. Sorry to bother with such a little project. Anyone else out there have G-Suite Admininstrator experience, and available to help answer a few questions via Meet/Hangout to help a simple, little Non-Profit assess options for G-Suite for Nonprofits (Basic edition).
I don't understand what you're looking for then. You literally said that you were wanting to see if they could use the service securely, and I pointed you to exactly what G-Suite offers as far as security. You also asked for those who have administered G-Suite, and again I foot that bill. In the end, it sounds like you bit off more than you could chew and you want someone to help you do the job you said you'd want to do. You cannot provide any real security with the basic edition. Period, end of story. G-Suite basic does not provide the protection that you yourself said your clients want. No conversation on Hangouts is going to change that fact. https://www.reddit.com/r/choosingbeggars
Exchange online plan 1 is completely free for non profits. That will cover your security and email needs. Microsoft Teams is now free and will be able to address video conferencing and chat needs. All you need to do is apply with Microsoft as a non profit.
Since no one else has decided to answer your question and just telling you to use Microsoft, I'll tell you what I know. We use G Suite for Education so I assume it is the same or similar to the Enterprise edition. You can set up different Organizational Units off your main domain and move your user subsets to those groups. Each unit can have their own gmail settings or you can use a blanket setting for all of them or you can mix and match. You can shut off incoming external mail for certain. I'm sure you can extend that to externally outgoing mail to prevent accidental emails, but I have never done that so I am not positive what the settings are. Set up your O/U's in the users section of the Admin console. The email settings are a little trickier to find. From the console go to Apps/G Suite/gmail and hit the advanced settings section at the bottom. The restrictions you want are in the compliance section assuming the enterprise console is the same as the Education console. Make sure you have chosen the right O/U on the left of the screen, it defaults to the highest level. So if you need to make changes to a sub-level unit you have to specifically choose that level. Feel free to email me through the board if you need more clarification or have other questions. I am going to be in and out for the next 2 weeks so finding time to hit a hangout or chat will be difficult.
Cool, thx, Castor27. I'm in no real rush. btw: I don't know what "email through the board" means anymore. I'll start a Conversation, OK? I'm going to talk to the Board President and get a better grip on what they want to do with Docs and Calendars, then will have a better grasp of the questions I'd like to ask you. I think we're ok on the GMail settings, but maybe there are some things I'm not considering.
Lol , tells you how long it's been since I emailed through the board. Yeah conversation is fine. Just let me know what you need and I can hopefully help you out.
Lol at telling @heypartner (who has decades of experience) that he bit off more than he could chew while not comprehending his question at all. I lol’d.
