    First look at NFL Street

    By Brad Friedman, SportsTicker

MAMARONECK, New York — A new brand of football hits the street Thursday.

After years of developing and months of marketing, NFL Street, the long-awaited video game title from EA Sports Big, finally makes its way into stores for the first time in the franchise's history.

NFL Street features fast-paced, 7-on-7 game play where players use show-boat moves, laterals and brute force to march their way down the field.

Battles take place in eight different locales, all of which alter the dimensions of the game. Each "field" has a unique size and surface — such as loose sand, dirt, mud, and turf — which affect the speed of players.

Over 300 of the NFL's biggest stars from all 32 teams are included in the title as well as legends such as William "The Refrigerator" Perry, Larry Csonka, Kenny Stabler, Barry Sanders and Lawrence Taylor. Gamers get to select from 40 random athletes in pick-up mode or chose from 10 off any given NFL squad in team mode.

Because only seven players are utilized, NFL stars are required to display their skills on both sides of the ball. That means Michael Vick can be found competing at cornerback or Lavar Arrington at wide receiver.

In fact, athletes can be used at any position — offensive players such as Vick can be placed comfortably at receiver or running back and less comfortably at guard or tackle, while Arrington can be positioned at defensive end, cornerback or safety.

The graphics of NFL Street are just as unique as its rules. Player models, which feature exaggerated physical traits, resemble super heroes in comic books.

Many of the player caricatures were inspired by famed urban artist Justin Bua, who, along with a team of young, up-and-coming artists he helped gather, lent their own styles and colors to the imagery of NFL Street.

Functionality, however, never took a backseat to form in the development process of NFL Street. The game play is nothing short of tremendous — while there is no basis for comparison of it with past NFL titles, it can be said that the speed, hard hits, juke moves, fumbles and interceptions in NFL Street are all taken to the extreme.

That type of arcade game play, however, is no substitute for the realistic style of play offered by another NFL title —John Madden Football— from the same publisher — Electronic Arts.

Even with that circumstance, NFL Street's sales figures could rival that of the best-selling John Madden Football franchise as a result of the number of consumers who favor fun as much as realism. To get a glimpse of NFL Street, gamers can tune in to MTV this Friday (January 16) at 8 p.m. ET to check out the music channel's documentary on the making of the game.

Making the Game: NFL Street features exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the creative forces responsible for NFL Street, including the Tiburon game development team, street artists, musicians and athletes.

At first I was wary about this game. I mean, NBA street was cool and fun, but that's because the popularity of streetball (basketball) has exploded with the and1 mix tape tour. I didn't see how they could make an NFL street; I thought they were just trying to milk this cash cow for all it was worth. Even joked that the next line of PGA street was about to hit the stores. But after watching the commercials and some sneak peeks, that game really does look amazing. Should be a fun one. EABig does it again. They rule all the "fun" sports games: I really like the SSX line too.

...but won't young kids, influenced by the violence of the video game, start playing tackle football in the street and start injuring or killing themselves?

    Sincerely,

NBA Street is one of the most fun games I've ever played. I'm not sure how football will translate to that "style," but it looks like it'll be a blast.

I honestly do not like the way it looks. It is one of those games I would rent before I buy.

My friend rented it this weekend and I have to admit it is very fun. The replay value is very high.

The pickup game function is great, where you choose your teams out of a pool of players. It is fun to experiment with different rosters too, since all 7 players on your team play both sides of the ball. My friend had a team with no QB and 2 RBs, and I tried a roster full of quick DBs.

I would pickup the game if you like sports games (which I assume most people on this board do). Its definitely more fun when playing against other people.

Bought it last Thursday, very fun and addicting. The only thing I didnt like is the Gamebreaker, its pretty much like unlimited turbo and gurantees u a fumble if on defense or TD when u are on offense. The buttons are a bit odd and how u can do "jukes" but either way, its works. I'd reccommend it, but miss how u can still tackle the person after the play is down ala Blitz.

The one on the left looks like Adewale Ogunleye, also of the Dolphins. Or maybe I'm crazy.

I think players play both offense and defense.

Ok so I got this game the weekend before last and I was going to write a review on it last week and tell everyone to consider not buying it. I am now glad I didn't write that but I do have to say for beginners this game is very, very hard. I'll give a brief review of the game then tell you the strategy I am using.

    Review:
There are several modes to play but the challenge mode is the best. You start with the NFC & AFC West divisions unlocked. You have two choices in each division. Challenge mode and ladder mode. Challenge mode sets you up in a unch of scenarios (ala Madden Challenge) where you perform specific tasks to earn rewards. They range from the easy to the downright ridiculously hard. This is the area where you can play against teams and if you beat them you can choose a player from that team. The catch, however, is that you start out with 800 game tokens and each challenge cost tokens. the easy challenges are 20 but the choos a player ones are 760. The only way to get more tokens is to beat a division ladder. On ladder mode you play each team in the division to 36. If you beat all four teams you face the division all-star team with the best players from each division. Once you beat the all-star team you can choose another division to unlock and you get 800 more tokens. eventually when you beat all divisions you unlock the all-time greats and have to play them.

    Strategy:
You start challenge mode with a very crappy team. it is tough to do anything while the NFL teams run all over you. My suggestion is to choose the balanced team and then pump up your Running back's speed, agility, run power and ball control. If you have any points left after getting your RB up, use them for blocking, speed or tackling on your other players. Play as many of the easy challenges you can then pick and choose the hard challenges you think you can win. Be prepared to do some of them over because you won't beat them easily. I would highly reccommend not doing the pick a player from a team challenge until you have beaten the NFC West ladder. You'll need those first 800 coins to build up your team so that you can actually win the ladder. After you have beaten a few challenges edit your team and work up your QB's passing and speed, your WR's Catch and coverage, your OL's Block and tackle, and your DL's tackling and D-Moves. One of the startegies I used in my games was to run the counter, crash and slam a lot. Most of the time you can get your RB to the outside and outrun a lot of people to the first down line. Make sure that anytime you are in the open that you do some style runs to build up your gamebreaker meter. I got to a point to where I could score at will on offense so save the GB's for Defense. iIt is nice to score then use a GB to get the ball right back and score again. After you have played most of your first 800 coins go into the NFC West ladder. If you ahev played enough you should start to see the game get a lot easier. Once my team was built up a little I was able to take out the ladder pretty quickly. One note. If you exit out of the ladder to challenge mode again you lose your standing in the current ladder. You can exit to the main menu though without losing anything(I found this out the hard way even though it warned me:mad: ). After you beat the first ladder my advice is to play StL and get Faulk. After you get him move your real good RB to WR. Faulk is bad. He runs over everyone and is pretty good on defense.

Once I beat the first ladder and got Faulk, the game got a lot easier. I have to admit though I was very frustrated with it. The AI is the cheapest I have ever seen. Computer assist for the losing team is always set to on in challenge mode and you cannot turn it off. there where times when the computer was losing that my best blocking lineman could not block the worst defensive player on the field. And that would happen 3 plays in a row. Now though I am really happy with the game and can say that it is real fun and the concept is interesting. Some of the hits into the walls are cool and there are objects all over the field. I would recommend the game but only if you are in for the initial challenge. I have seen reports on the GameFaq boards of people breaking things because of this game, so beware :).
