Since when is it acceptable to refer to an Asian as a 'Chinaman'. I just heard the announcer refer to Yao as the 7 foot Chinaman. Isn't that equitable to the announcer saying Francis is the 6 foot Negro?
No, but it would be the same as referring to Steve as a 6 foot American Man. Chinese Man would sound much better though.
Ignorance is bliss I guess. It's an offensive term, DEAL WITH IT. It's the same as if he had called a black player a Negro or a colored player. Not quite as offensive as the N-word, just as Chinaman isn't as offensive as the C-word. I'm sick of the double standard, it makes me sick to my stomach.
It is an offensive word to many. To some it isnt. But you have to think of even one person from tht group. If he gets offended by that word. It should not be used. Plain and simple. Im sure there are many Africans in Nigera, for example, who wouldn't give a crap if you called em by the N word, but here in America it is one of the most racially incorrect word. So in conclusion, It should not be used.
I was told by Gordon Quan's (Houston City Councilman) assistant that the "C" word was just as bad as the "N" word. Where is their outrage at TNT?
Reminds me of the time that Gilbert Salinas (7 footer from a San Antonio high school) played for Notre Dame. He came into a nationally televised game against UH many, many years ago. Al McGuire said "That's the tallest Mexican I've ever seen". After a commercial time out, McGuire apologized to anyone he may have offended.
Not sure what your point is. But I would like to see a big deal being made about this. Too many people in America are ingorant about these things.
Dude chinaman is not the prefered nomenclature, asian american dude. Walter these guys didn't build the f-ing railroads, man.
There was no offense intended, he's from China. Croatian, Russian, Serbian are thrown around all the time.
My point is self explanatory, if they can blow up at me for saying the word, they'd better blow up at him too. Is there some difference that I missed? GET THE POINT?
I'm not saying offense was intended. He was simply being ignorant. Chinaman is also not the same as "Russian" or whatever other idiotic examples you are throwing out there. Chinaman is recognized as an offensive racist term. You can either accept that, or contintue to wallow in your ignorance.
I do get the point, and I was not trying to be a smart-ass to you or anything. I was just simply looking for clarification. We have been at odds in the past about racial matters, but I'm with you on this one. There needs to be some general education about this stuff.
Well it's nice to agree on something. I'm calling the councilmans office tomorrow to voice my concern...again.
Well folks, the Chinese population is very miniscule in comparison to the honky and the negro. You'll have to excuse the unlearned majority of the USA in relation to the Asian, more specifically, the Chinese culture, of what is and is not politically correct by their standards. Truthfully, what does the American public really know about the Asian/Chinese culture? Not much. We see "made in China, Taiwan" etc, all over the things we buy. But what does this country actually know about the Chinese people? Not much, which is a big reason why Yao is such a big thing here in the States. Some people seem to WANT to believe that everything and everyone is against them. What harm is there in contacting TNT, or whoever, and saying "Hey, Mr. Steve Kerr. I'd just like to tell you that using the term C-man is rather offensive to the Asian poplulation, and I'd appreciate it if you would refrain from using it." ??? Naw, let's stir the pot. Maybe we can get our own month. Good day.
