http://www.sportsline.com/nba/playerrankings/regularseason/C Can anyone tell me how they calculates a player ranking? The centers have consistently lower score than the other positions. And most of the top centers score significantly lower than they did last season. These rankings don't make sense.
Yes it does. If you look at the stats, how in the world can Yao be ranked higher than Shaq: Yao 15.7ppg 52fg% 77ft% 9.3rpg 1.6apg 1.9bpg 2.4tpg Shaq 20.0ppg 55fg% 52ft% 11.6rpg 3.1apg 2.4bpg 3.0tpg
If they base the totals as to how players rank in the respective categories, then Shaq's FT % brings him way down. Example, O'Neal is first in scoring and rebounding while Yao is 2nd and 3rd, so while he ranks ahead of him, his total of 2 (1+1) is not much better than Yao's 5 (2+3). They are fairly close in everything in that respect except FT% where Shaq is way down the list.
If you normalize Yao's out put based on the minutes Shaq played, he would be 17, 10.2. I guess that the sharp discrepency in FT shooting made the difference.
I agree with derrock how can Yao be ranked higher. I guess they reank FT% above everything else put together.
It all just depends on how much weight they give to certain categories. Here is ESPN's player rater, based on averages: http://games.espn.go.com/cgi/fba/playerrater?iSort=1&iPeriod=1&iPos=4 FWIW, Brad Miller 1, Ben Wallace 2, Yao Ming 3, Shaq 6.
Shaq is obviously better than Yao. However, this dude is about to retire. The number of games he misses each year due to injury will increase every year. He'll still bring it in the playoffs though. I remember Hakeem's last few years in the playoffs. He never really got good numbers in the regular season. He was basically saving himself for the playoffs in which he would rise up and stomp the opponent. However, it was an omen that his career was going to end soon.
no... they don't reveal the formula but look at the descrepancy between Yao and Shaq's GP. i would have to think that with any formulat, the GP serves as a multiplier, so if we could scale up shaq's GP to above 30, he would certainly be rated about yao.
I looked at the player rater and it's ridiculous. They summed the scores for eight categories, and how can 3PM weighs the same as scoring average? And how can field goal percentage weighs the same as FTP? And finally, how can BPG and APG weigh the same as SPG? According to their equation, a center who averages 30 ppg, 12 rpg, 2 bpg, 2 apg who is 60% from the line will come out ranking lower than a dude with 15 ppg, 10 rpg, but 3 pbg, 5 apg while being 80% from free throw line. The player rater is as useless as it can ever be.
About to retire, he's 31. It's not like he's got a blown out knee, his sitting with a strained calf, not exactly a career ending injury. The only reason Shaq has missed games is because he's too dumb or too lazy to take care of his injuries in the offseason. Also, I think your memory of Dream is a bit fuzzy. Here are his last 3 seasons making the playoffs with the Rockets. Regular Season Playoffs 1996-97 23.2ppg 9.2rpg 78games 23.1ppg 10.9rpg 1997-98 16.4ppg 9.8rpg 47games 20.4ppg 10.8rpg 1998-99 18.9ppg 9.5rpg 50games 13.3ppg 7.3rpg (lockout) I'd say that 97-98 is the only one close to your memory. But, if you miss half the season, you probably won't put up your regular stats. Also, these 3 years Olajuwon was 34, 35, and 36 years old. Basically I'm just saying that Shaq has more in the tank than you think.
I have to say... I really am impressed with him 2.... Id still talk a healthy Shaq over him.... but no one else I think comes close to 2nd....nother 2-3 years shaq will be below Yao on the depth chart at the 5 ... imo
Yeesh, these are FANTASY rankings for FANTASY basketball...where the number of 3 pointers you make can be worth just as much as your blocks or free throw %.
