ESPN.com Power Rankings Up to #9 from 12. I guess it is how much you put into these rankings. The entire Midwest Div is in the top 12. That is pretty amazing.
9 (12) Rockets 23-16 For all the talk about what Yao can't do, wouldn't you want him on your team? Rhetorical question, because there's only one answer.
If I were one of the big 5 teams with aspirations of winning this year's championship, I'd take Yao over anyone else on the Rockets team to win right now.
Funny that the Lakers are still in the Top 10. I know how great they would be with four future Hall of Famers on the team, but right now they're missing three of those guys, and I always saw these rankings kinda like the College Men's Basketball Top 25 (what have you done for me lately?) Lakers have been losing and will continue to do so until they get their boys back.
The funny thing, was last year, when the Lakers were under-.500 they kept them in the Top 10, and their excuse was "They're the world champions, you can't take them out". Well, they're NOT the world champions, so what's the excuse now? Who would I put ahead of the Lakers? Sacramento San Antonio Minnesota Houston Indiana Detroit Dallas New Jersey Milwaukee New Orleans They may not all have better overall records then the Lakers, but they're playing much better right now. And injuries isn't an excuse, because, if San Antonio or Indiana were banged up, and losing like the Lakers, they would be dropped in the ratings.
You can downgrade the Lakers now, but when they get healthy they are top 5.... And I am not a fan of theirs
A good point. The answer is: Lakers have the one of the biggest audiences (if not the biggest) of all NBA teams. They're 'Mr. Popularity'. ESPN has always made its NBA reporting include a huge amount of popularity or lack thereof (Rockets, for example, aren't popular, and therefore don't receive from ESPN the credit they deserve. Never have.). As I've said in other threads, journalists' primariy obligations aren't toward truth or fairness.. it's toward selling product. -- droxford
