Hubble Space Telescope is in trouble after gyroscope failure

The Hubble Space Telescope has advanced our understanding of the universe immeasurably since it was first deployed to low Earth orbit in 1990. It's impossible to overemphasize just how valuable it has been to scientists. But now, the space-based observatory is in trouble. The NASA Hubble Twitter account announced that on Friday, the Hubble Space Telescope went into safe mode after a gyroscope, used to point and stabilize the observatory, failed.

Safe mode? Just reboot, no problem.

Gyroscope failure sounds like something that would happen while a janitor is gyrating to p*rn.

Still better than a gynoscope failure

Not until 2021 at the earliest now.

Space X should offer to send a mission to the Hubble for a repair, if NASA will pay for the parts, a decent portion of the expense of the mission, and supply the astronauts needed to do the job. They are talking about sending a couple of people to orbit the Moon and return in the not distant future, one a private citizen paying for the privilege. I would think that repairing the Hubble would be a far better use of their developing expertise, in my opinion. It would also be a tremendous boost to their reputation as a provider of cutting edge spacecraft, manned and otherwise. A repaired Hubble would remain extremely useful to science for many years, regardless of the success of the James Webb, and I certainly hope that the Webb is a success. My assumption is that replacing all the gyroscopes (I think there are 3) would be the obvious goal. Some will say, why? I say, why not?

Does Space X have manned-flight capabilities, to include docking, space walks and --- most importantly -- human re-entry?

They are working on it as we "speak," heypartner. My suggestion was a serious one.

Hubble can actually run with just one gyro, but it will change the things it can image.

    Sorry...I couldn't resist below...

    Ripley
: Well, then somebody has got to go out there, take a portable gyro, and patch it in manually.
Hudson: Oh, sure! With that space debris flying around? You can count me out!
    Bishop: I'll go.
Hicks: Yeah, I guess we can just count you out of everything, Hudson.
Hudson: That's right, man. Hey, why don't you go, man?
    Bishop: I'll go.
    Ripley: What?
Bishop: I'll go. I'm the only one qualified to patch in the gyroscope anyway.
Hudson: Yeah, man. Bishop should go. Good idea!
Bishop: Believe me, I'd prefer not to. I may be synthetic, but I'm not stupid.

Right. All they need is to build a new rocket, space craft and get them all man rated. Train new astronauts for a few years on the mission. No problemo lol. The shuttle was stretching fuel to get at hubbles altitude. It's out there.

Heck, I would have given Hubble a good kick if I could have gotten a ride. "Deckard! Space hero!"
