When was the last time a team with the Rockets record (43-45 wins) did not make the play-offs?? I know I know...they had their chances and they blew it..Im not trying to justify that they should be in the playoffs...just curious as to what other team in past years had more wins but didnt make it...anyone?

No team has ever had 43-45 wins and not made the playoffs. Not since the 16 team format was adopted.

The Rockets were 40-42 in 1980-81, and they went on to the NBA Finals.... so that should put some perspective on it.

There is no time in the last 15 years when a 45-37 record would not get a team into the playoffs in the Western conference . I checked using cc.net's historical section.

A 45-37 record would have gotten a team anywhere from the 4th seed(twice) and the 8th seed(once) in the Western conference. The average seed for a team w/45 wins in the Western Conference is 6.26th. For the lockout shortened season, I used win percentage instead of wins.

The average winning percentage for a playoff team in the Western conference for the past 15 years :
    8th seeds - 0.480
    7th seeds - 0.520
    6th seeds - 0.555

This system sucks , lets move to the XFL .

Can you believe the record we would have had if we were in the East?!?! 3 seed at least . This team is respectable .

The best record, since moving to the 16-team playoff format, for a 8th seed, was 44-40. We already have 44 wins and aren't even close(3games) to being in the playoffs. I think the NBA needs to consider realignment in the conferances so everybody has a fair shot at the playoffs.

If you take the winning % for Houston against the east and west and then calculate how many wins they would have if they were in the east(that is 54 games against the east and 28 against the west I think) you get 45 and 11(well 10.7).That means a 56 win record which right now, with about an avg of 2 games remaining per team, only san antonio has a better record.

There was a time in the league when teams played 84 games during the regular season?

wasn't Houston once part of the Eastern Conference, back in the day when they came from SD?
