Was doing my normal workout today at lunchtime as it was chest day. I remarked to this one guy (I'll call him "the engineer") that always works out with me that I hadn't maxed out in a while on the bench. He says, "So, what is stopping you from doing it today?" So, me, him, and this other guy who also always works out with us maxed out. Here is the tale of the tape: Me - 6'2" 193 lbs, 30 years of age The Engineer - 6'2" 206 lbs, 28 years of age Other Guy - 5'7" 168 lbs, 53 years of age The Engineer had done 300 twice in the past, once when he was in college and the other time about a year ago. He has been out travelling a lot and has fallen off a little bit. He got 275 once and then tried 290, but that wasn't happening. He probably could have gotten 285 but it was going to be tough. The 53 year old guy had never done anything higher than 275 (which that is incredible in itself considering his weight and age) and not only did he do 275 easily but he also got 290 one time! As for me, my previous max was 245 and I eclipsed that. I got 260 one time but didn't really come close to 265 - amazing how 5 lbs makes such a big difference. As I close in on my 2 year anniversary of working out, I am extremely happy with my gains. I went from not even doing a bench press workout, followed by a max of 155 (2 months after starting) to 260 now. Maybe I can get 300 someday as that is my goal. Looking at reps at certain weights, this is what I have done (all of these have been done in the last 2 months) 260 - 1 rep 225 - 5 reps 205 - 8 reps 185 - 12 reps The reps for the 225, 205, and 185 are a little deceiving as I have done previous sets before that and thus am tired but I still go up; however, that is what I have to go with since I have never done a "max-out" day on just reps of a certain weight. But as you can tell, I am pumped! What do other people around here bench? I know that 4chuckie, tozai, and TJ are big lifters and I think there are some lurkers that work out on a continual basis - be interested to see the "strength" of this board.
I've slacked off since the holidays but I was around 275-280. School and work keeps me from working out as much as I'd like to.
After about three months of serious working out I got 225 up once last week. I was pumped, it was the first time since high school I benched my weight, well actually 15lbs over. Just curious if you referred to the one guy as "The Engineer" because of his profession or because he is using some Chemical Engineering to "enhance" his workout.
Arthritis in my shoulder is going to hamper my workout comeback, but I hope to get back to a strong workout routine soon. My best weigh in/bench was 6'1-195 lbs benching 305. This was when I was in the middle of my divorce about 3 years ago and was all I had control over. I've been trying to build up to hitting weights full force, but until I get my shoulder scoped to get an idea of the degeneration in there, I will be sticking to cycling about 6 miles in 30 minutes.
Well, thanks but don't forget to take me to Mendy's, okay? PEF, I called him "the Engineer" because of his profession.
I am not naturally very big, 6-4", 200 lbs, sport more of the tall and lanky style over the years.. lifted pretty seriously for about a year and got up to 205 on bench (which was great for me considering where i started)... now I have been too busy with work and fallen off BIG TIME (amazing how fast 6 months goes by). When i went the other day, I could barely finish a set of 10 with 135... pathetic and not very motivating.
That personal power guy, Tony Robbins, said he benched over 500 at golds gym when he was on QVC last week. I was like whatever. Then he showed video tape of it with trainers amazed at what he was doing. I'm not sure if It was real or not. But he said he went from benching 180 as a tall guy with trouble to over 500 very quick. Hard to believe. But I don't think he lies either.
So what is his profession? I don't get it. I don't max out even though I should. I work out alone (and naked) so maxing out is probably not a good idea.
He is an engineer, specifically a mechanical engineer. Yea, you need someone to spot you if you want to max out - been there done that in trying to bench without one - not a good idea. Oh and gimp - glad that I am a "contributing member"
Im still working out that started around when the last thread was opened about "the best trainer in the world argument." I have still not gained that much weight but i am getting stronger. Does anyone know of any supplements to recommend for gaining. I already know i need to eat more, but just want something that will help me out in other ways.
I had my sister spot me doing 225 once. When I struggled with my last rep she was trying not to help too much. But then I just got more and more tired until both me and my sister couldn't lift the bar and she had to ask someone for help. I guess that wasn't as embarassing as being pinned by the bar and yelling for help but I've been there too.
330 in high school and around 300 for most of college. I'd be lucky to do 200-220 today, what with being old and fat and all.
My max is 280 lbs at 2 reps. However, I have not been working out in a while due to a bum shoulder. Plus, I'm on an anti-health kick in opposition to the health kick the rest of America is supposedly on. My goal is to weigh 900 pounds, to not be able to fit through my doorway, collect disability benefits, develop open sores with maggots, bench press stacked big macs to and from my mouth, and have a crane move me(when necessary). Wish me luck!
