I am quite certain that all of existence would have collapsed had it not been for the following creations. The Kinks : Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire / Soap Opera / The Village Green Preservation Society / Preservation Act I and II The Pretty Things : Parachute / S.F. Sorrow Love : Forever Changes The Small Faces : Ogden's Nut Gone Flake The Velvet Underground : The Velvet Underground and Nico / The Velvet Underground / Loaded
yeah you right RIOR is a great album, I just like rock for light, also i against i as for Prince, for me its Dirty Mind cause is so damn funky I also like your picks for JB, Parliment and Ramones
Sugar - Copper Blue Leonard Cohen - Songs from the room Social Distortion - Mommy's little monsters Dag Nasty - Can I say Danzig - Lucifuge Death Angel - Act III Exodus - Bonded by Blood Excel - the joke's on you D.I. - Horse bites,...
ok... you know I have some opinions about Metalclaw... their definitive album is actually Ride the Lightning...Master is great...but Ride the Lightning is quality from start to finish. everything after Justice was crap..and even then...Justice is weak in comparison to the early stuff.. When I am in a good rocking mood..any one of the first three Metallica albums are great... KIll Em All, Lightning, and Master are all kickass....Justice is decent..the Black Album, Load, Reload, and St Anger SUCK. They used to be regular guys...I had the good fortune to have some beers with em after a show at the Summit...and they were some of the coolest guys...but regular guys now? They are too famous and take themselves to seriously these days...playing what they think will continue to keep them at the top of the charts instead of the Metallica that got them there. /end rant classic albums are albums that will be loved and listened to years after they were released. Some really good suggestions so far.. my picks. Piece of Mind is a great call stra...wonder why you think they cant be taken seriously? I take Maiden very seriously....very,very talented...normal guys that happen to play some of the most kickass metal on the planet..from what I have been told..you couls walk up to any of these guys in a pub and toss back a few with em...they dont mind being around their fans.. Queensryche -- Operation Mindcrime great great album from start to finish.......... I remember now...I dont remember how it started.. GnR -- Appetite ...nothing they have done afterwards can hold a candle to this album..love it from start to finish.. ACDC -- Back in Black what more can be said? The bands tribute to the great Bon Scott..not a bad song on there.. Iron Maiden -- Number of the Beast.....if you like Maiden at all....this is the album you must own.. Judas Priest -- Hellbent for Leather and Screaming for Vengeance you can not lilke Priest without owning both of these. It is a moral imperative.. Aerosmith -- Rocks and Toys in the Attic.....this is Aerosmith the way it was intended to be listened to.. Led Zeppelin -- IV ...actually...any albums from the Mighty Zep are classics...this just happens to be my favorite.. Cheap Trick -- Live at Budokan .. oh come on...how can you not love this album? great set...great crowd..Rick Nielsen rules! Elton John -- Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Honky Chateau ...some of his best work is on these two albums..Bennie, Rocket Man, Funeral for a Friend, Saturday Night.... Anthrax -- Among the Living ... the definitive Anthrax album before they gave into the need to combine metal with rap...gret stuff....I could also have gone with Armed and Dangerous...either one is great. Thin Lizzy -- Jailbreak is the studio album that contains their biggest hits, but if you really want to hear the genius that is Phil Lynott....Live and Dangerous is the way to go. Van Halen -- any album from Van Halen I to Fair Warning is a must for any serious fan of the Van Halen brothers..I hated Diamond Dave...but I must admit...VH was much better with him.. Journey -- early Journey is great stuff.....for a good representative sample.....the live album Captured is what you want to get..all their best early music..as much as I couldnt stand Steve Perry.....the man can sing...and he had one of the best bands behind him of any of the "pop rock" bands of the late 70's-early 80's..Neal Schon, Ross Valory, Greg Rollie, and Steve Smith. BTO -- Not Fragile ...the album that captures BTO at the height of their power..a must own... BOC -- Fire of Unknown Origin ....If you know Blue Oyster Cult....you own this album...nuff said.. Deep Purple -- Machine Head ...Space Truckin...Highway Star...good stuff all around...Richie Blackmore is one of the most under-rated guitarists ever. Ozzy -- Diary of a Madman ... the last studio album to have the genius of Randy Rhoades...filled with great songs from beginning to end..RIP Randy. + Black Sabbath -- Paranoid .... not a bad song on it...if you have heard it...you know it. ok...this has gotten ridiculously long....I could go on for at least another page....but this covers the stuff I feel strongly about....and I havent even gotten into the softer side of my musical tastes(except for Journey, Elton, and Cheap Trick)....
Got to work an Arthur Lee show last summer where he played that entire album with a mini-orchestra. The cat showed up to the theatre about 15 mins before he had to go on stage, ****-faced, but he was brilliant. The best part was the encore, where he inadvertantly managed to make Nash Kato (of Urge Overkill) cry.
Very nice. R2K - did you ever get Budokan: The Complete Concert? It's a 2-disc set that was put out in the last few years or so.
No, I hadnt...thanks for the headsup tho...I'll be sure to put that on my must-get list. a couple of more I forgot .... Styx -- Pieces of Eight ... from back when Styx was one of the biggest bands in the country...this album rocks. Even if you think of Kilroy and Dennis DeYoung's overblown pop aspirations when you hear the name Styx....this album shows why they were one of the best back in the day Night Ranger -- Dawn Patrol...the best album from one of the big poprock bands of the 80's...featuring one of the most under-rated guitarists to ever pick up a axe...Jeff Watson. These guys could rock the house down....very technically proficient...Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis brought the hard rock dual guitar mentality to a group that had good song writing skills and the pop style to appeal to different types of fans.. Triumph -- Allied Forces....an outstanding album from one of the most under-rated hard rock groups...their bluesy style was combined with Rik Emmett's blistering guitar work to produce such classics as Magic Power, Fight the Good Fight, and Fool for Your Love. Dont dismiss Triumph till you have fully given this album a chance...simply masterful playing and songwriting. Rush -- Moving Pictures .... I absolutley kicked myself whenI realized I had left Rush off my previous list...one of the god fathers of progressive rock...Moving Pictures was their most commercially popular album...even if it wasnt their best..many diehards will tell you that 2112 is their best...to me..its a close tie. and speaking of progressive rock... Dream Theater -- Images and Words ....itis really hard to choose the best of DT....but this album had more accessible songs to the masses....while still keeping intact the awesome musicianship of the members....When it comes to songwriting and chops....nobody does it better.
Rockets 2K I actually enjoy reading your posts. Nice that you don't just list some albums but actually write something to back it up. It's a little funny how bad a misfit Elton John is to the rest of the artists on your list. Why do you like Elton John? I mean sure he has made some ok pop music but really that is it isn't it? I also have to say that you are not doing Metallica justice by saying EVERYTHING after Justice just sucks.. I mean I understand if you like the earlier albums better but the Black Album and St. Anger does not all suck. I really think that is a reach to claim they do.. but ok your opinion is as good as any... The reason I wrote that Iron Maiden can't be taken seriously is not that I don't respect them! I respect them a heck of a lot I tell you. Through all these years they have continued to make their own kind of music not being affected by critics and they are still kicking it full speed live (I saw them last year... Bruce Dickinson is a mad man..love him). I mean it in a positive way when I say that they can't be taken seriosly.. I mean come on look at how they dress and their hairstyles It's so cool
Do any of you think that the Fallen album from Evanesence has a chance to become a classic album? I mean so far I have heard three songs and I love how they sound.. I must pay up so I can own this album... Maybe not a classic but just a personal favorite perhaps.
I have read this entire thread and all I can say is I agree with R2K about Metallica.... but I beg to differ stra, with your opinion on "The Black Album" pulling Metallica out of the underground and into the spotlight. "And Justice For All" was their "breakthrough" or"mainstream" album in my opinion. They produced their first video in their history, "One", and this is the main reason I share my opinion with R2K. anyway, there are so many music and film threads that I choose not to participate in, but since I'm here, I'll go with the obvious... the album that started it all for me
An older partial listing for younger posters.... Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power New York Dolls - Same Velvet Underground David Bowie and the Spiders - The Man Who Sold the World, Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory CBGB's - Live Double Record 1973 Television - Marquee moon Lou Reed - Live (One w/Intro to SJ and Heroin), Transformer Ramones - 1st B52's - 1st Blondie - 1st Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway The Clash - London Calling Frank Zappa - Apostrophe! and Overnight Sensation Captain Beefhart - Bongo Fury Talking Heads '77 Led Zeppelin - Take Your Pick Pink Floyd - The Wall, Meddle, Dark Side etc. The Pretenders - 1st LP Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers There are a bazillion more......
well....I have very weird tastes in music....I didnt even get into the others I know...Heavy metal/hard rock is the genre that I enjoy the most...so thats what I discuss first...if someone had asked about blues or jazz...I would have done just the same discussing them. re: Elton John...I grew up listening to his music and I have great respect for his abilities as an artist...he and Bernie Taupin have written some great songs over the years...and as such..I haveto give them their due respect. re: Iron Maiden....it's cool...I didnt understand quite what you meant about that. Those are some of the reasons I have mad respect for them...they bow to no one..they do things their way, damn the critics...as long as they like the music and their fans still like it...thats all they care about. You gotta respect groups like that. As for their live shows....I agree..I have seen them on the last two tours since Bruce came back..and it is just like when I saw them in their heyday...except for the addition of Janick Gers, and the fact that Adrian and Dave allow him to do all the fancy solos..they are ust as powerful live as the first time I saw them on the # of the Beast tour. There is a reason many current rock bands will admit that Maiden are an influence to them... re: Metalliclaw......I realize that my opinion is kinda extreme and isnt supported by much more than emotion...but I was heavily into them from day 1...I had one of the riginal pressings of Kill Em All....and if I had my way...they would have never got big and changed their style....I loved the angry, just-a-bunch-of-fans-playing-instruments persona they had in the early days before they got real popular and decided to start caring more about their chart position than they cared about putting out quality music. I supppose it is your prerogative to enjoy their later stuff...but to me...there is no Metallica lilke old Metallica. nothing personal man...really. re: Fallen.....I enjoy this album alot...I like her voice...and I like the music...I dont know if it will become a classic per se....but it is a lot better than many other albums put out lately. I would advise getting it...I think it is worth the money.
On a Metallica note, I just love and have always been a big fan of "Garage days re-revisited. "Small Hours" "one Last Breath/Sweet Caress" "Crash Course In Brain Surgery" just to name a few off the top of my head. was this jason newsted's first album that he played on. cliff died on the Master tour am I correct?
I might have missed them in this thread: The Doors Still haven't figured out which Springsteen album to recommend. Probably Born to Run or a compilation.
hehe... this is what happens when you get me on music and I have the time to actually make substantial posts.. but thats as deep as I go...forget about world history or philosophy....I dont know jack about them. ricerocket....early Metallica....and pre Megadeth...I got a hold of a demo version... a bootleg of some of the original stuff that Dave played on...wish I could find it...but I have it around here somewhere. I guess I should have also added Megadeth to that list....the classic from them that is my favorite is Peace Sells of course...but I also think Rust in Peace should be a classic..
Great call! Ska, punk, funk, hard rock, rap, this one has everything. A SMOKING version of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddies Dead". I never did get to see them live.
