Can you imagine these guys when we actually put a MAN on Mars? Mars scientists Steve Squyres, right, and Mark Boyles celebrate after learning the rover Spirit rolled off its lander and onto Mars today, placing its six wheels on the ground for the first time since landing on the planet nearly two weeks ago. Controllers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., embraced and applauded. "Our wheels are finally in dirt," whooped one engineer.
I'm just saying they went nuts because the rover put it's wheels in the dirt. How crazy are they going to be once the rover does some real work? (Don't think this is a knock on the space program, btw.)
That is absolutely not overreacting. Think about how much of their life they invested into this project. They were simply celebrating the fruits of their labor. If I was in their shoes, I'd probably be swinging naked from the ceiling light fixtures.
If I worked on that project I'd be going crazy too. It has to feel incredible knowing you contributed to something like that.
I would be pretty damm happy if my spacecraft/rover was rolling around on another planet, but Steve Squyres can be very much over the top. On another note that picture is begging to be photo chopped.
I know rolling onto the dirt seems like a small deal but according to the reports I have read that was actually one of the most critical steps. If the rover doesn't roll out exactly right then the multi-million dollar project gets scrapped. Remember if the rover gets caught on anything or hangs up on something there is no one around to get it unstuck. So I can see exactly why they are excited. They accomplished the most difficult task at this stage of the project and now they get to RC Pro-Am that baby around the surface of Mars.
Landing is the riskiest part of the trip. The lander is basically dropped out of the sky and bounces and rolls across the surface of Mars. The fact that the rover rolled out indicates that the landing was successful.
When I saw this at chron.com, the first thing I thought was - "CAPTION GAME!" Funny picture... silly NASA geeks! (I think its prety damn cool though - the whole Mars thing that is)
