Excellent! Very happy for Hinch, and very happy for the Astros. He's a great manager, and he also has the perfect temperament to be a manager and address the media. He handles everything well, and is perfect to the job. Wonderful news!
I’m pretty stoked by this. I really like Hinch and feel like he’s without question earned the extension.
Stros rehired a great coach. Awesome. I was worried a team like the Angels would snatch him up as he is a Cali guy.
I posted in another thread I’ve been driving the Hinch bandwagon since the day he was hired and hope he manages here 20 years. He’s great. I’m very happy.
Helped bring their first world series title last year and giving them a chance for another this season. Well deserved. I wonder how many years.
I'm sure there will be a knucklehead or two who will bump this thread in the future whenever he makes a big mistake.
I think the actual x's and o's of being a baseball manager are overrated. Moreso than any other sport you are dependent on your players simply performing. But managing personalities is where they can make a difference, and by all accounts he is exceptional at communicating with his players. Not to mention that he, you know, just won a World Series.
I think he's underrated in the x's and o's as well. I think its a much harder day-to-day/game-to-game challenge to manage pitchers in the AL due to the lack of built-in "pinch hit here" in the lineup like in the NL. He made the most of the bullpen last post-season, survived this year's Giles inconsistency, and has gotten the most out of guys like Peacock/McHugh. That combined with the total shift mentality, and the Astros are at the forefront of in-game decision sciences.
Cons: every year it seems we underperform our expected record based on run differential. Lot of reasons behind that, but aside from bad luck it also seems like Hinch manages for the postseason rather than any regular season accolades, which is why you’ll never see this regime set franchise records for things like W-L or traditional individual stats like HR RBI R or anything else. Pros: we won a World Series so all the cons are moot.
They won 101 games last year. One off the franchise record. I don’t see him, or any managers in MLB, managing for the postseason.... that’s purely an NBA phenomenon.
That's true, except that it's not. We outperformed our run differential in 2016 and 2017, if only slightly.
