I should probably start a thread for this, but as someone mentioned, we already have so many music threads. Besides, these classify as classics to me. Still, I'm going to give them a different description. These are albums that after I got them, I listened to them over and over and over and over again. It's like a went months and months where I had to listen to them--all the way through--several times a week. You know what I'm talking 'bout? Surely you've had the same thing. I'll see if I can put them in order of when I bought them. Willie Nelson--Stardust (this is back when I liked Country music...oh...about 25 years ago; had this one on eight track (own it on SACD now)) Led Zeppelin IV (had this on eight track too.....strangely, didn't REALLY get into Zep until about 15 years after owning this album) Eagles Live (think I had this on eight track as well). Aerosmith Live Bootleg (had this on LP, and I just about wore it through) Iron Maiden--Powerslave Van Halen--just about everything up to 1984 New Order Substance (my first CD(s)) Then during the blur that was my later college years, I had: Depeche Mode--Violator; Sinead O'Connor--The Lion and the Cobra; Aerosmith--Pump; Guns and Roses--Appetitie, UYI I & II, and Lies; The Black Crows--Shake your Moneymaker; The Cure--Staring at the Sea; Led Zep I; ZZ Tops first seven albums; Buddy Guy--Damn Right I got the Blues; EVERYTHING from Stevie Ray; Eagles Greatest Hits I & II; Don Henley's End of the Innocense and Building the Perfect Beast; U2's Joshua Tree; INXS' Shaboo Shabah, The Swing, and Kick; Temple of the Dog; Soundgarden--Bad Motorfinger; Nirvana--Smells like teen spirit; Pearl Jam- Ten; Tripping Daisy--Bill; Pink Floyd--Animals, DSOTM, The Wall, and Wish you were here) Gosh....I know there's more.....I just can't think of any of them.
I have to agree with Manny i think "master of puppets" was their pinnacle I can still put "master on the turntable and it still sounds as good as it did in the eighties, therefore i think that is a classic. I think too much radio play turned me off of the black album as it did with alot of music. especially classic rock. I know a lot of you will hate me for saying this but i cant stand Led Zepplin for that reason, they have been played to death. They made good music but I just cant bear to listen to them anymore. here are a few albums that I consider "classics" or ones that i can listen to over and over Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um Charles Mingus- Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, John Coltrane - Giant Steps John Coltrane - Live at Birdland Miles Davis - b****es Brew Miles Davis- Jack Johnson The Sonics - here are the sonics Captain Beefhart - the spotlight kid Beastie Boys- Check your head/ Pauls Boutique Jurassic 5 - power in numbers Slayer- South of heaven DJ Shadow - endtroducing Robert Johnson - King of the Delta Blues Sun Ra- Space is the Place Jimmy Reed - The ultimate Jimmy Reed Marvin Gaye - Anthology Esquivel- Space age bachelor pad music The Misfits- Walk among us Bad Brains - Rock for light Beck - Odelay Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante Fugazi - Steady diet of nothing minor threat- Discography Dj Shadow, Cut Chemist- Brain freeze anyway I got a little carried away, I could go on but this is enough
Queen - "A Night at the Opera" Cheap Trick - "In Color" Guns n Roses - "Appetite for Destruction" Aerosmith - "Rocks" David Bowie - "Ziggy Stardust" AC/DC - "Back in Black" KISS - "Alive!" Alice Cooper - "Billion Dollar Babies" T. Rex - "Electric Warrior" Thin Lizzy - "Jailbreak" Mötley Crüe - "Shout at the Devil" Ramones - "Rocket to Russia" Van Halen - "Van Halen" The Cult - "Electric" The Sex Pistols - "Never Mind the Bollocks..." Def Leppard - "Hysteria" Queensryche - "Operation: Mindcrime"
A lot of rock music getting recognised which is nice to see... Someone said Guns n' Roses appetite for destruction which I agree very much with.. Welcome to the Jungle is so great on max volume on big stereo. I love that song.. Best Guns n' Roses song ever IMO. As i am not american it is interesting to see what music people over here have listened to.. It varies a lot from the Airplay in Denmark I can tell you that!!! But still I will throw another album to the mix after the Black Album It will be.... Piece of Mind -- Iron Maiden This is not an album that has ment a lot to me over the years but I now recognise how great this band really is. They are themselves and impossible to take serious or label but I just love them. And they get a lot play in my apartment.. Full speed. The Trooper is my favorite song on that album.. "You'll fire your musket but I run you through"
Well okay let me rephrase that about The Who... I know the band but have never listened to it ok.. big mistake it seems but they have been that big a deal over here ok.. Chill!! But I will borrow the Who's next cd and maybe find out what the big deal is...
No maybe about it. Go borrow the CD and you will find out why "Who's Next" is considered a classic. I guarantee it.
Well ok another Classic which will round up my hard rock music preferations are..... Nevermind -- Nirvana (well i know it's supposed to be grunge but really it's just hard rock isn't it) Great great album.. I remember hating Nirvana just because everybody I personally hated on my school worshipped them, but then someday I listened to their music and was like "Damn this is wicked" so I secretly listened to them while i didn't want anyone to know because a certain way of living and dressing was related to the whole grunge thing.. at least in my country and I didn't really feel like becoming a part of the whole movement. But love the Music and the best song is probably Lithium.. great song that one.. So so far I have Metallica, Iron Maiden and Nirvana.. Well that sounds about right but my taste is a lot wider than that.
Well I will go to sleep now since I have a huge exam tomorrow but look forward to reading peoples responses tomorrow Farvel vi ses senere (Bye see you later)
Outkast- Stankonia: To me, this is the most ground-breaking album in hip hop history. Overnight it changed the scene forever. But on a lot of ground-breaking discs, the music is not totally likeable. I have yet to find a cut on this disc that is even slightly weak. Herbie Hancock-Empyrean Isles: Imagine Miles' band without his autocratic leadership and you get this gem, one of the finest albums of the bop era. Erykah Badu- Mama's Gun: Badu burst onto the scene with her smash Baduizm, but on this CD, she blazes her credentials as a musical genius with an outstanding voice, excellent rhythmic sensibility and a self-deprecating sense of humor. Sade- Lover's Rock: Sade was gone for a loooooooong time, but when she came back, the results were sweeter than a piece of sweet potato pie. Her voice is perfect, her backing band is one of the tightest on record and her songs are as perfect as one could make them.
Definitely agree with Outkast. Stankonia is probably more of a classic because of it's unique style, but I'm more of an "Aquemini" guy myself. I just enjoy that album more. Other classics? Counting Crows- AAEA Live- Throwing Copper Smashing Pumpkins- Siamese Dream Pearl Jam- Ten, Vs. Dr. Dre- The Chronic Snoop- Doggystyle Beastie Boys- Licensed to Ill Better than Ezra- Deluxe Rage- Self-Titled, Battle of Los Angeles U2- Joshua Tree Toadies- Rubberneck Eminem- The Slim Shady LP RHCP- Blood Sugar Sex Magic Nirvana- Nevermind, In Utero That's enough. I'm sure I could go on, but then I'm starting to get into albums I like rather than "classics." I've probably already crossed that threshold.
Great call, DC! I've been thinking about firing up that album in the near future. Here is one album I left off that I got recently that I feel is a classic:
The ROIR album - Bad Brains (sorry allan, it's better than Rock for Light, but the band does dominate) 1999 - Prince Truth or Soul - Fishbone (very underappreciated and forgoten) Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime Ramones - Ramones Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome - Parliament James Brown - Live at the Apollo I Zen Arcade - Hüsker Dü somebody stop me.....
