    I disagree Refman.

For one thing, if a random RNC official (not a top one) said something like this, I don't think that big a deal would be made by either side. If it was, the RNC and Republicans response would be very similar to Democrats' response to this.

Yes, there is a double standard. It's not fair that only hispanics can say such things about other hispanics or that only blacks can say similar things about blacks. I say it's high time we gave white conservatives back the free pass to say all the racist things they want. I mean, sure, it's barely been 40 years or so since racism was still very acceptable, but that time needs to come back because it is the fair thing to do.

    DOUBLE STANDARDS ARE WRONG

And not only that but I heard some black man on MTV call 50cent his "*****" the other day!

Imagine how mad everybody would get if I denounced 50cent as a *****! Wah wah wah wah wah!

The burning desire of conservative anglo-american males to be able to use racial insults without fear of criticism has always stupefied me. Grow up guys.

Those of you republicans whining about a double standard, you're forgetting that the quote came from a hispanic. If a white democrat or republican made this comment they would indeed be scewered. Seems to me the press has not been favorable to Dean this week.

Just like he sought out and fired the officials that outed Valerie Plame, right?

That guy needs to be more than fired. He should be arrested, tried, and put in prison. There was a felony committed by someone in the whitehouse with top security clearance. There are only in the neighborhood of a dozen people who have that kind of knowledge. We know who the suspects are, and something should be done. Blowing undercover agents and all their contacts while our nation is at war with terrorism is one of the most dangerous and unpatriotic actions I can imagine.

Actually, Bush got 45 percent of Texas' Latino vote in 2000. But, nationwide, he received 35 percent. Most analysts will tell you that Texas was an obvious choice given the familiarity with him and Gore completely ignored the state assuming he would lose here.

It was 2001 (not 2000) when Sanchez got a majority of the Latino vote over Brown, but polls of the community found that the primary reason Latinos supported Sanchez was because he was of Latino origin. The Latino Dems made the critical mistake of assuming their community would recognize Sanchez' conservative streak.

This past year, with White much more visible in that community, he trounced Sanchez, a particularly tough blow to a candidate of Hispanic origin losing his own community vote.

Much has been made of the GOP's overtures towards Hispanics over the past few years. The GOP has hoped they could appeal to Latino's conservative streak. However, recent polls have shown the influence of the GOP to be waning a bit mainly over key issues in the Latino community.

For Hispanics, they do lean conservative on certain family and religious issues - abortion, for example - because the majority are Catholic. They also support some tax and small business positions of the GOP as you mentioned.

However, LULAC and other large Latino organizations strongly support unionized labor, universal healthcare, strong gun control, expanding the entitlement programs such as aid to dependent mothers and child welfare initiatives. Like any group with a large number of impoverished members, they support many key issues that broaden the government's support of those less fortunate and dislike privatization efforts by the GOP.

Most importantly, Latinos are staunchly in support of strong immigrant welfare laws for obvious reasons. It is almost always the issue of immigration that drives a wedge between Hispanics and the GOP, particulary in southern states like Florida, Texas and California. This is even more true of Mexican-Americans.

Also, Hispanics are less likely to be as influenced by personal-issue politics such as "family values" type policies as they are by community and personal welfare. So, if they are to be swayed by the GOP, Republicans will have to convince them that they are ready to provide relief to impoverished families through government support programs and immigrant welfare policies.

As long as that difference exists, the GOP will struggle to gain more support among Latinos in America.

Point out to me where I said anything remotely resembling an expression of desire to use racist sayings. So then you take my statement based on the substance of the debate and twist it into me saying that I want to use racial slurs...cute.

To use negative terms with racial underpinnings in order to attempt to discredit your opponent is wrong...I don't give a damn what color you are.

She was an aide to Pete Wilson. I can see where Ybarra is gettting at. But I don't condone the remark.

Point out to me where I said you wanted to use racist sayings; I'll save you the trouble, I didn't.

    Here's what I said,

Note the bolded terms; big difference.

Anyway, my point is valid and remains unanswered: why is it so important that waspy types be able to use stereotypes or slurs without fear of criticism ? Don't you see a difference in meaning from when Snoop Dogg calls a guy his *****, and when Strom Thurmond talks about em?

You're doing a fine job discrediting yourself, chico. Why so sensitive?

The cavalier attitude expressed by some of the resident, good left of center types in this situation is by no means surprising.

This regurgitation was: bigoted, without class, unfair, arrogant, condescending. God forbid one stand on principle on these type of issues - apparently not that Mr. Ybarra would know...

Secondly, I would dare suggest that Rosario Marin, obviously an accomplished woman, came across as the winner in this one. She is the antithesis of Steven Ybarra.

Lastly, I applaud bigtexxx for posting articles of this nature. I find no "mock sympathy" from him, basso, T_J, bamaslammer et. al.; it should not matter, not in the slightest, but yes, I am of hispanic descent.

    Just my two bits.
