Sure - but isn't this exactly what you're doing in reverse in criticizing the Gomez/Fiers trade? Many GMs would have loved to have gotten Giles too. Other teams wanted guys like Gomez and Giles too, which is why the cost was high. You can't say Lunhow loses trades using future results when it's useful (Gomez/Fiers/Giles flopping) but ignoring them in others (prospects flopping). That just makes it seem like you have an agenda to make all the trades look bad. Similarly, you criticize the Astros for paying a high price for in-demand players, but then also don't give them any credit when they get a guy at a lower cost by taking advantage of unique circumstances to get less-demand players (Verlander). There doesn't seem to be any good way to a trade for you.
Harris, yes. Peacock, maybe - as a reliever last year, Peacock was more dominant than Osuna has ever been, and he can also be used as a starter so he's pretty unique. Osuna has a longer track record of excellence, though. But what's the relevance to my point?
None. None of our points are relevant. I just wanted to know if yall thought he was better than the low guy in the pen, because that's all that really matters to me right now. Bullpen pecking order moves up and all that...
Dont you think its a little different comparing prospects to "established" players in the league? We all know that all prospects dont make it, but thats a chip we hold (potential) vs trading for guys that hes already seen in the majors. Who here would say Osuna was an in-demand player? Hes coming with a legal battle, a 75 game suspension and has only pitched 15 innings this year. Its trading a broken piece with prospects for an highly bad publicity piece in Toronto. Fresh starts were needed all around. if Verlander was a top priority for Luhnow, he wouldve been acquired at the non-waiver deadline, yet he wasnt. Its not that I dont give credit, its just that he was acquired after all channels were exhausted for other players and he happened to still be on the shelf for both sides to come to an agreement. You dont think Detroit lowered their price in the final hours of the seasons deadline to shed money? I give major credit for Cole.
Yes. Osuna is likely to be at the top of our bullpen. We now can move everyone down a peg... we have a lot of depth now.
I know that, you know that, I just got home and walked into the middle of something and decided to interject for no reason whatsoever. Of course he helps the pen, that's all that matters.
You're making a lot of heavy assumptions here. - he was "on the edge all these years" - he is "surely broken after the incident" - he doesn't have the ability to compartmentalize his time on the field from how he's changing as a person (assuming that he's a bad guy if he performs well on the field, basically) - those in the front office don't know how to evaluate people, and have no ability to determine or research lies vs. truth better than throwing their thumb in the air and feeling the wind All of the above is rooted in assuming that everyone handles things the same way. I'd rather hope that a front office who has shown themselves to be thoughtful took a thoughtful approach and put some serious time and effort into this decision, and see how things shake out.
I don't know if this is true or not. I'm hoping it isn't.. because where are we if "wrong place, wrong time, but did nothing wrong" = black stain on the person forever? If someone said I murdered someone, but I've never done anything wrong in my life...companies should be scared to hire me and avoid? (Not really a comment on this particular situation as much as the hypothetical you wrote above.)
He is better than both. What people are over looking. He is 23 yrs old. 23! The numbers he put up in these 3 plus years as a 20 to 23 yr is crazy. So you can't compare him to Giles and Rondon. Where were they at 20 years old?
He is better than both look at Osuna age 23 years old. The potential is there. Also wasn't Osuna a starter before the Jays put him in the bullpen
Osuna is probably top 3 closer in the game today. At 23 years of age. I just wish he didn't have issues that make me feel a little gross inside. But as a pure baseball player he is as elite as they come. He has the potential to the best closer in baseball period.
So...lemme get this straight: We Love Luhnow! Yet we all think the rotation is lacking Luhnow trades for starters We all Love Luhnow! Yet we all think the bullpen is lacking Luhnow trades for relievers People are b****ing? We Love Luhnow! Yet we think the lineup is lacking....
A lot of people are really pissed that he traded for Osuna. Really wish he got Britton or Hand, or even just stood pat. This is giving us so much negative publicity. It could even hurt our fanbase. This does not seem like it will just die away. And Verlander, Correa, McHugh, etc. were not happy that they were not told beforehand. And from the sound of it, Hinch was not informed until after the trade.
You really believe this? LOL Just because you dont like Osuna doesn't mean they feel the way you're portrying them. I didn't get that from the Verlander interview. I didn't hear from the others but if you have give me a link I would like to hear their interviews.
If the charges are dropped, all is good. I like his numbers, and postseason experience. But if charges are not dropped, I seriously worry this could be bad for the team.
From Hinch's pre-game interview: "I talked to Osuna after the trade". He did not speak to him before, but never said that he wasn't informed. My bad. But Hinch did say Osuna was extremely sorry and apologized "like 10 or 13 times" and was happy for a new opportunity with the Astros. Verlander, who has previously spoken hard against assault, has his words to say. Also Correa and McHugh interviewed as well. https://www.mlb.com/astros/news/roberto-osuna-traded-to-astros/c-288081150 EDIT: Also, "Verlander, to say the least, does not sound pleased with the pickup, and said he was not among the players general manager Jeff Luhnow consulted before making the trade." https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...tin-verlander-roberto-osuna-astros/868450002/
