I tried to find updates and there wasn’t much more than this https://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2...iolence-assualt-court-case-police-rob-manfred There are a few key points that affects how this case moves forward. First, the Canadian Judicial System is a bit different than America’s is. They don’t have a specific charge for “domestic violence.” Instead, domestic violence falls into whatever category the actual offense is, from physical assault to sexual assault. Since Osuna was charged with “assault” we can surmise this wasn’t sexual assault, but rather likely physical violence of some kind. Second, the case is going to move much slower than it would in America if the case goes to trial; it could take between 18-30 months according to some reports to be concluded. He’s sure not to be reinstated until the case is concluded or at the very least all of the facts are known.
I’m witholding full judgment on Osuna the person until his case is finished and more details are provided. Of course one might assume it was a Ray Rice situation given MLB suspended him for twice as long as Chapman. But, not a lot of details have been provided.
I trust that statement from Lunhow. It is a bit vexing that the organization would trade for a player suspended for domestic abuse, especially after already dealing with a similar situation at the minor league level. But you have to take things on a case-by-case basis and I want to believe that the organization did their homework and are confident his legal issues won't continue to be a problem, but more importantly, he is truly remorseful and is seeking help to better himself. Every man deserves a second chance. Just like we saw with Yuli. And if he squanders it, the Astros sure as hell better stand by their zero-tolerance policy. That's how they can "own it." Not by giving him a second chance and taking on his baggage, but making clear his past behavior won't be tolerated and allowing the veterans in the clubhouse to have a positive affect on him.
Doesn't seem like luhnow wins many trades. I am hard as NAILS for getting rid of giles but not as a package. With osuna aboard now, can we no longer claim were the Good Guys?
This article has some good info regarding the incident and the actions the Jays took after. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/roberto-osuna-the-blue-jays-and-the-limits-of-presuming-innocence/
I know nothing about his case, so I'm not going to comment on guilt/innocence/etc. What I can say, strictly from a PR perspective, is that the Astros are one of the teams that can "eat" this. We have so many positive forces on this team that this can be viewed as an opportunity for rehabilitation and rebuilding his career. It's post scandal Michael Vick, though obviously hitting a woman is worse. Some people will never forgive, but most will move on if he shows genuine contrition.
Who knows what happened but this suspension seems like a shoot first ask questions later response considering the suspension Chapman got in 2015. I guess his next court date is Aug 1. Hopefully the details aren’t terrible since nothing is known right now.
While your point(s) have merit, they fall in moral and ethical ground. In that context, you can be sure he will be held to the same level as the rest of the players. If he stumbles, he will be gone. Another side to this is the idea of redemption. If the trade makes sense for baseball reasons and he is denied on moral or ethical ground, its about the same as saying we view him as guilty and irredeemable. I am pretty sure our brass considered the question before moving forward.
Giving up Paulino and Perez, for a domestic abuser much less, is.... disappointing, to say the least. I personally don't think I will be able to root for this guy. Obviously doesn't affect my love for the rest of the team but I can't say I am excited or happy about this decision.
