Or we could have a PG that could stop dribble penetration at least some of the time, this isn't a new fault in the rockets.

Superstars win games. Your team can only go as far as its superstars. During this season, both of our superstars have had trouble playing like superstars. In this game, Francis stepped it up and scored well, yet Yao was invisible. The defense on Yao was very tough I'll admit, but when half of your superstar duo is missing in action, you're gona be hard-pressed to win the game. And when your superstars are consistently underachieving like Yao and Steve have been this season, you will be hard pressed to win. Until they both step it up (especially Yao), I have a feeling we won't be making very big strides.

It would be nice if Steve could do a bit of dribble penetration himself. What happened to that? He's always been a **** defender, now he can't even score.

Yao DO has the stamina to play in nba, but it's not enough for a team like Rockets whose PG cannot pass the ball in time.

Exactly. Without Francis, the rox would be fighting for Western conference supremacy.

It's that godforsaken zone. Twisting around 5 defenders and finishing takes alot out of you.

Blueprint to beat the Rox?....... Watch hours of tape of them running their screen (Celts obviously were prepared), keep Yao from establishing position (simple), play off Cato to help stop any penetration, and in tonights case make Jim Jackson score 30. Just hope that we're not hitting alot of perimeter shots and you should be fine.

Main thing is Yao though. Once a team succeeds in taking him out of the game, we're barely better than the same team we had a couple years ago except we can't rely on iso's. Forget about a postup game, you're just trying to work the ball around for a low percentage shot.

I am no basketball expert. But from my observation he can only play 20-25 effective mins. Why do rockets first few plays must run through yao? I think one of the major reasons is that he has more energy at the beginning of the game to hold his position. Do u feel yao is much more active at the start of the game? After few plays, his body language shows that he's very tired.

I do think alot of his fatigue is mental. When your standing there wide open waving your arms in the air and dont get the ball (saw this atleast twice last night and its been happening all year) its going to be mentally straining and hes not going to want to battle for position, theres really no point. None of our guards have good crisp passing and timing with him and dont get players the ball in the right opportunity to score.

We have a really bad mesh of players here yao and jackson are probably the only team players on this team. Steve is horrible at running this offense, worries about his personal stats rather than setting up players, often gets into personal matchups with an opposing player making the game 1v5 in the other team's favor, and we are not playing him to his strengths but rather to his weaknesses. I dont know how anyone can think were going anywhere with a shoot first point guard thats ridiculous, get a tall point and move steve to the 2 is it that hard?

When your talking zones, your speaking a foreign language to JVG - he's old school man-2-man.

I wouldnt call it a blueprint for beating Houston. Boston played the same way the play anyone else. They front the post, deny the lob and force you to beat them in a 3 pt shooting contest. We played Boston's game last night and we lost. They took away the inside part of our inside-outside offense. Advantage = Boston.

Same thing with Seattle. They average around 18 3 pt attempts a game. They play similar to Boston. Dribble penetration and ball rotation till they find their open outside shooters.

Unfortunately for the Rockets, the one thing their defense allows is alot of outside shooting, alot of 3 pointers.

    Check this out:

    Top 3pt shooting teams:

    1. Sac
    2. Sea
    3. Hou
    4. Bos
    5. Phi
    6. Orl
    7. Tor
    8. NY
    9. SA
    10. Den

We are a combined 5-8 against those teams.

    Bottom 3pt shooting teams:

    21: Chi
    22: No
    23: GS
    24: Lac
    25: Por
    26: Phoe
    27: Was
    28: Atlanta
    29: Cleveland

We are a combined 9-2 against those teams.

In losses, our opponents average 5.9/17 on 3 pters. In wins, our opponents average 4.4/13.3 on 3 pters.

    The hits keep coming....

Hey, he wasn't home in NY. What did you expect? These guys don't listen to him or play for him anymore. The guy is a horse's ass and has no respect from the org or players. This will get ugly before it gets better....

DaDakota makes a great point about yao. He does not make a great target. I'm not putting all the blame on him but it is partly his fault. I think yao should be spend more time on the outside. he's not a great rebounder anyway. He should clear out the middle. This would also clear the middle for drives by sf and cat. Right now, mo is the best post player on the team. This isn't a knock on yao, it's just playing to his strength. Most big guys don't like to be 15 feet from the basket so yao should be able to get that shot (and make it) whenever he wants.

A lot of pressure on Francis and Mobley and be physical with Yao Ming. Do those 3 things and the victory is yours.

I also think so. JVG is just not rational, he hates zones. As a coach, he should be flexible in using whatever defensive schemes.
The guy is stubborn. I hope he can adjust.

    dadadakota,
while i may disagree with your opinion, i hear you on the lack of ...umm, desire, that comes from yao, but i just really think he is exhausted. all this playing for china, and then jvg rigorous practices, that MUST be it! i mean, he can't just be that must of a sissy! i hope not at least. as far as the other points, i dunno, i still see it as a lack of playing time together with jvg style. they seem to be pressing on defense, and as that becomes second nature, the offense will improve.

while all this is speculative, what isn't is you sig. mankind did not evolve from apes and chimps. we share a common ancester and could best be called cousins. sorry, its about as much fact as the scientific world has. to ignore it just because you don't agree is like saying you don't agree with gravity. just cause you don't understand it, doesnt make it not true. or maybe you just didn't know. whatever, doesn't really matter. its not too important to many people, except us anthropology geeks!
