The pitch was bringing in a huge development in the area that would provide economic growth to the area. If that place is so forgotten and run down, that's exactly what the town would need to turn it around. Instead they are blinded by their own bigotry.
While I can appreciate your seeking to empathize with the people and not jump to labels, you then have to extend that to essentially all hate. What is the basis of hate, because most people who hate aren't "bad people" ya know. They love their families and work hard, and help others. I mean, do you think the people who killed Jews or Chinese or anyone in history for that matter didn't treat their kids with love and generally were considered decent folk by those who knew them? What this video exposes is hatred. You can say that hey let's not be too harsh and label them, but with all due respect, that smacks of white privilege as you are not the target of their hate and it's very easy to write that off. Yes it's hilarious and these people are idiots and it might be easy to dismiss them as just a function of the media. But it's not that simple. The media doesn't cause hate, it stokes the flames already burning. Fear (the irrational viewing of someone as a threat) and the dislike of those who are different is the fuel behind hate - because that is what most hate is when you reduce it. These people generally see Muslims as evil people. And I would say that view is pervasive across America.
The irony of it all is that they think Muslims would bring violence and terrorism...all while they openly threatened that there would be problems if there was a mosque AND one of the guys even implied that they should burn down the mosque if it was built...thus, he's basically saying he's a terrorist himself... The guy in the back even warns that it was good that they weren't allowed to bring their guns...whatever that meant.
Yes duh we are all privileged to have free time, but that's not what white privilege means and you know that! I am not trying to attack you, but it raises an eyebrow when you seemingly excuse their racism as some "some fancy-pants liberal with a ponytail came talking about building a huge mosque that we don't need". Just didn't expect that coming from you - more from one of our right wing friends here. In reality, that whole fancy pants liberally educated ivy-league condescending tone they hate is really a distain for education and knowledge that would force them to question what they think. It is tribalism which is just another way to say jingoism.
