This past season, we saw the Rockets institute an offensive system with a power structure more befitting of a group trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. Houston put overwhelming pressure on their creators (James Harden, Chris Paul, and Eric Gordon) to initiate everything, and everyone else was expected to fall in line. Capela (or his backups Nene and Tarik Black) was the vertical spacer, the person who dislodged defensive assignments and reoriented matchups for the benefit of a creator. The lowest of the three-tiered hierarchy in the Rockets system, it seemed, were the spot-up shooters, who remained stationary for the bulk of the team’s possessions. It can be a tedious, unfulfilling existence on the court. It’s a reflection of how Houston views the 3-and-D role in general: as a cheap, replaceable commodity.
Perhaps, this is how Morey sees 3-and-D players... and let Ariza and the Mbah a Moute walk... if that's the case... who are filling these roles next year?

    Another snippet:

The Rockets have drafted five centers in the four drafts from 2014 to 2017, seemingly for the express purpose of finding capable Plan Bs.

15 million...were the Rockets supposed to match that?

Hasn't it always been this way for the Rockets though? If Morey place a high value on 3&D players he would have made matching Parsons (more all-around than 3&d as his game evolved) offer a priority. Instead he went another route and signed a cheaper (and of course more capable) replacement in Ariza.

This is just speculation. It's not sourced.

But, I could see it being true.

Well I think the real purpose of this article was speculating whether the Rockets would be at least semi-OK with CC taking the QO because they don't want mid-range contracts on their books at around the 15-20m range, and it hints at the way we draft players and build them with the Vipers - suggesting we can just continue churning out Clint Capelas and that we have one in the waiting with Hartenstein. But Clint had already been playing for a full season and change by the time he moved into the starting lineup after Dwight left, and even in his first season he was logging minutes in the Conference Finals against the Warriors. It's not like he was ready from day 1, which is what Hartenstein would have to be to take over next year.

I would agree that nowadays 3&D players are easier to find on the market. For our system they don't have to be great two way players since we are not asking them to create and play make for themselves and others. We just need guys that can defend on the wings at an above average level and hit the OPEN 3 at an above avg level. We don't need a Paul George or kd type of wing to be successful. Ennis looks to be a good enough wing for our system, even MCW could be successful here, particularly on the defensive side with his length and athleticism. Melo should do just fine in the system getting lots of open looks.

When Harden brings the ball down court, taking a few dribbles between his legs, assessing the opposition's defense, he'll probably see the following:

Carmelo Anthony, standing in the right corner behind the 3 point line, where he shot 41.7% last year
James Ennis, standing in the left corner behind the 3 ponit line, where he shot 42.3% last year who also finished around the basket at a 65% clip
Clint Capela, at the top of the key, preparing for a PnR (if needed), where he finished almost 70% of his shot attempts at the basket

And then you either have Chris Paul (midrange), Gordon (3 pt), or Tucker (3 pt) as your other available option.

    Not bad.

I'd really like to believe that when Trevor got that $15M offer, Morey told him, "Man, that's great for you. We can't get anywhere near that. And we want you to be happy. Go for it." And same with Luc, on his offer from the Clips. I'd like to believe that the Rockets organization is sending a consistent, feel-good message to players that we'll either pay you or help you get paid somewhere else.

I can't believe otherwise because Morey has done right by pretty much all of his players after their stint with the Rockets, unless they knew their rights.

Of course, you always hope that a split up ends mutually and on the best of terms.

Hell we traded away Ariza to the Hornets before he "found himself" with the Wizards and then soon after signing with us.... no hard feelings, trade and all.

Now the way the Capela situation is being presented in the media may throw in a wrench into the image of that "yeah man, do your thing and get paid" mentality that we should have with our FA both incoming and outgoing. Simply for the mere fact that people always look at negotiations, especially when stalemated or stagnant at some point, as red flags of our front office. When in all reality, this ends up being a business at the end of the day.

Hopefully Capela comes around soon, but we have to be shrewd with our assets and remain flexible for the future, even while currently being in win-now contender mode.

They had no reason not to except for saving money. Not saying that’s a bad thing but it was purely about money.

As long as no one calls Shelby a "cheap, replaceable commodity", we're good.

i don't know. After the Ariza presser, judging from his comments he may not have even been offered a Pj tucker type contract with little/no room for neg.

Players may be treated as assets but they aren't not asses treating them as such.

I think this was more for finding a capable backup for Dwight at the time and they found a capable replacement in Capela and now still need to find a capable backup for him. Big men still tend to get overvalued/overpaid so its cheaper to draft and develop a big guy considering the big man development talent they would have access to in Houston (Dream, CD etc)

It is basically the way he operates. I think he is underestimating the scarcity of these type of players, but then again I’m not a GM
