It's rare to get more bits and pieces from an NBA player. U only heard the diplomatic side from media interview. It's easy to tell Yao Ming to be more mean and more aggressive. As Yao Ming said, he needs to learn and understand how to do it with effectiveness (not getting into foul trouble)
Ask him if he wants to play counter-strike next weekend... I like his hook though....he has a nice formation and takes the right steps and if he could master it then that would be a great best weapon.
user, do you mean that Yao needs only one break after the first six minutes, and he's pretty much good to go the rest of the game, or does he need a rest halfway through the 3rd quarter as well? I guess I'm asking if Yao thinks he could play 40 minutes in any given game, provided the break in the first quarter.
Unfortunatey, I get the feeling that Yao's problems will drag on all season, but IMO he'll suddenly break out of ALL his bad habits next season and make a dramatic improvement over the previous season. I just think he needs another summer like the last to relax for a while (I know he has Olympics, but still). I think Ewing said it best: Yao needs to start enjoying the game again (paraphrased). JVG is making him think too much. Yao just needs to want to play basketball and win again. But I think after one season of JVG's craziness, and one offseason of Yao being away again, he'll come back better than ever.
I am not sure whether Yao's problem was biological rather than habitual. My relative has a similar problem in sports. He is very explosvie and aggressive in the first five or few minutes in almost every sport he plays, basketball, baseball, soceer, you name it. Then he needs a rest; and said he does not feel tired after the break. Yet, from our observation, he is a different person after the break. He is no longer explosvie and somewhat disappears. That problem does not exist if he plays a explode and break (non-continuous) sport such as badminton. The doctor said it's because he had asthema when he was yound. He is probably still prune to that when he grows up. Mind you, he is so atheletic that he won national championship several times and played school teams in several sports. So, this type of sportman could be very good even with asthema. What I heard in the summer was, Yao has asthema. In fact, some reports said it was quite serious. You can always see he is sucking hard during a game, which could be a sign of asthema. If that is the case, he may have a similar biological problem as my relative. Maybe some posters with medical qualification could comment on this?
Regarding the lack of involvement in the Game during the second half do you consider that he might be defering to other players, as he doesn't want to take away from their Game? In which case that could be cultural rather than a medical consideration. The running out of energy after six mins. is another question, but he states that after the rest he recovers for the rest of the Game.
