People are just reacting defensively as Rockets fans. Luckily the negotiations with CP3 were over quick, but if there had been any reports of Houston offering $20m per and CP3 asking $40m per, we would see the exact same type of threads, loaded with how CP3 is ancient and there are a bunch of scrubby point guards better than him. Even before FA started, people were already downplaying Paul's contributions because they didn't want to come to terms with giving him max dollars.
The Rockets want value. It's not about their willingness to pay $25 million to Clint. It's about the value of his contract. They want a contract that is valuable so that he could (potentially) be used in trades. If he is on a good contract, he's an asset. If he is overpaid, he is a liability. That's why Eric Gordon is such a good asset. He's a good player being paid $12 million per year. If he was being paid $20 million, he wouldn't be nearly as tradeable.. similar to how Ryan Anderson isn't tradeable. Ryan Anderson could easily be traded if he was making $5 million per year.
I dun care if you give Paul 50 million per year (well a little) but you have to give him 2-3 years. Giving out 4 or 5 years is just gagging your franchise when the guy is washed up.
