I realise the financial implications, but I was talking more from a purely basketball standpoint. Basketballwise, not giving Capela a fair offer is a big mistake.

Even if no other team comes up with an offer of more than $12m per year, I think the Rockets should give him at least $15m/year. In the context of what bigs get paid around the NBA, that's a bargain for Capela's production and impact on the court. It's just unfortunate for him that his restricted free agency has coincided with a dearth of cap space around the league.

But if Houston are going to have any chance of beating the juggernaut in Oakland they need Clint, and they need Clint to be willing to do the dirty work that may not necessarily add up to a big contract, but will add up to big wins. He's not going to be a team first guy if he's on a QO.

Chemistry is important, a happy Capela = a dominant Capela. What was the point of locking into Chris Paul salary hell for the next 4 years if they aren't actually going to go all in?

If this is true, I hope the two sides compromise and the Rockets offer Capela 4/68 and he accepts.

If Rockets stick to 4/48 I'm afraid Capela will definitely opt for the QO. With the Rockets being well over the cap, the question of how much Capela gets, really only affects Till-Man's wallet or Capela's pockets.

Agree, and Capela is NOT a max player. With his current limitations, (50% free throw shooter, and can't create his own shot), he is worth between $12M and $16M per year. Personally without an offer sheet from another club, if I was Morey, the most that I would offer would be at an escalating contract which assumes his further development - starting at $12M and increasing by $2M each year. That'd be $60M over 4 years. I don't think he'll make up the difference next year if he takes a QO of $4.8 this year. He's not a max player. If he's insulted by that offer, let him take the QO.

Capela is even not better than Dwight Howard now.

Either he signs the QO and most likely will be traded. Better to trade him for something than lose him for nothing

    4/$60M seems fair.

The problem is that not everyone agrees what Clint is worth. You think one thing, and I think another. Clint thinks one thing, and the Rockets think another. If the report that the Rockets offered around 4/48 is correct, then that's what the Rockets think he is worth.

Let's face it, no other team has made Clint an offer. If Clint was a better player then I think someone would have made him an offer. It is what it is.

I will say this. If Clint passes on an offer in the 4/48 range, then I think he's taking a big gamble. The gamble may pay off, but it's a big gamble. Clint is only 24, so he can still get that mega deal in a few years and still live very comfortably in the meantime.

While that is true on ability, it isn't true on being a player. Dwight can't accept a team role, Dwight can't accept being a Pick and Roll guy, so Capela is better then Dwight.

not worth 80/4 though. 4/68 is acceptable.

Clint can't hit free throws, shoot outside jumpers, and don't have a post game.. He's good at lobs and block shots. ok rebounder. He can be replace.. Warriors got Cousins for 5 million.. Wizards got Howard for 2 years 11 million.. Rockets not about to reward Clint for last season.. they're going to pay him current Market Value. If someone offers him more then Rockets will match.

Capela will definitely be taking a gamble if he takes the QO, but so will the Rockets. Worst case scenario is, Capela further develops as a player, leaves the Rockets next year as an unrestricted free agent AND the Rockets being well over the cap have limited options to replace him.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was Luis Scola the only RFA that Morey has ever signed to a fair deal without forcing him to find an offer elsewhere? Considering Morey ended up amnestying Luis, could he be hesitant to do that again?

The 'market dictates the player's worth' strategy, while it could result in the best deal financially for the Rockets, will do doing nothing for team chemistry and undermines the importance of having a committed, happy player. I don't really care about the luxury tax or the mythical flexibility that Morey always chases - the Rockets need to go all in, right now, if they want to improve on 65 wins and a WCF exit.

Worst case scenario is Capela takes the QO, because then he'll be gone after next season, or earlier, as Morey could be forced to trade him just to get something for him. What's that going to do to the Rockets' chances (admittedly already slim) of beating GSW?

Looking at what other C's get paid (outside of guys like KAT and Embiid on rookie deals still), then 4/48m is a ridiculously low offer for what Capela does for the team, not even mentioning how pissed off Harden and Paul would be if Cap leaves or is traded.

There are some real dumb contracts out there, but Cap and his team would see a guy like Steven Adams on $24m per year and of course they're going to be insulted when Morey comes out with a $12m/year deal and says that's the best they can do. Same as Rudy Gobert - Cap just smashed him in the playoffs and he's only worth half the money?

    Al Horford $28m

    Andre Drummond $25m

    Marc Gasol $24m

    Deandre Jordan $25m

    Steven Adams $24m

    Rudy Gobert $23m

    Enes Kanter $18m

    Bismack Biyombo $17m

    Tristan Thompson $17m

    Jonas Valanciunus $16m

    Timofey Mosgov $16m

    Gorgui Dieng $15m

    Robin Lopez $14m

    Tyson Chandler $13m

    Marcin Gortat $13m

    Cody Zeller $13m

    Miles Plumlee $12.5m

    Nikola Vucevic $12.7m

    Omer Asik $11m

    Meyers Leonard $10.5m

Enes Kanter is getting 18M this year, Capela is worth more than that even with his inability to hit free throws.

4/80 seems like too much but you’re essentially locking in your core 3 over the next 4 years and you’ll build around them from there. Capela is still growing as a player as well and just hitting his stride.

If I was a business man I would rather have Clint Capela take the qualifying offer and take my chances on resigning him next year. If I fail then I’ll see what’s up with DeAndre Jordan.

To be fair Capela is probably worth around Larry Sanders type money (maybe slightly more) prior to Sanders having any issues.

It definitely is. Capela has flaws still... Rockets are set up best to hide them.

Even at 4/68 you are getting a steal in Capela
