Roberts fails to land a roster spot

TORONTO -- Stanley Roberts failed to land a roster spot with the Toronto Raptors.

The Raptors declined to sign Roberts to a 10-day contract after working him out this week, with general manager Glen Grunwald saying Tuesday the center "needs to get into better shape."

Roberts hasn't played in the NBA since 1999 when the league suspended him, citing use of an amphetamine-based drug. Roberts denied using the drug.

The NBA reinstated the 7-foot, 300-pound Roberts last January but no team signed him and he hooked up with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Roberts, 33, signed a non-guaranteed contract with Toronto last September, but was waived a month later.

He worked out for the Raptors again Monday, but has since returned to his Houston home.

"Stan has a ways to go. He has a ways to go in a lot of areas," Toronto coach Kevin O'Neill said.

Grunwald didn't rule out another tryout in the future.

"He needs to lose a little bit more weight and then we'll get him here again," Grunwald said.

Roberts, who played with Shaquille O'Neal at LSU, was drafted by the Orlando Magic 23rd overall in 1991. He averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 19.6 minutes with Orlando, the Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota, Houston and Philadelphia.

He used to be someone you could take on as a project because he's (supposedly) very skilled for a guy that size, but now that he's 33, I don't know if he'll ever find a roster spot.

Wasn't he considered a bigger prospect than Shaq at one point? Just as big... but with skills.

Yes he was and judging by what I saw he did have better overall basketball skills. I don't think he was ever the athlete Shaq was and is though.

Not to get off topic here, but if any of u watch wresting here, how do you think the Big Show would do in basketball? The guy is over 7 foot and over 500 pounds. He makes Shaq look small. Even if he had no basketball skills, couldn't he be taught the fundamentals. Once he gets in the post, who is going to be able to move 500 pounds? He's also extremely strong, so would have no problem backing down people in the post.

There was a story recently where a hometown kid was supposed to be a ring announcer at a recent show. Well the kid's dressing room door got stuck and he was locked in his dressing room. It was one of those steel type doors too and everyone was trying to use crowbars and stuff to get it open. The Big Show comes along and tells everyone to move out of the way and he just kicks the steel door open!

IIRC they were teammates at LSU and was Roberts getting more playing time or was Shaq?

I would love to see the Big Show Body Slam Shaq and then dunk over him. What about Andre the Giant. I think he is 7"4 600 pounds.

What happened to Thomas Hamilton? I remember being at a game against the Jazz and he dunked on like their whole team. That guy was huge.

Hate to burst your bubble but the Big Show is nowhere near 500 pounds. Wrestling is a poor entertainment business so making him sound bigger then he really is, is just inflate his appeal as a big guy.

Well, all the fat guys still got Oliver Miller to look up to.

Like Chris Rock said, "Oh, you think you all that with your fat ass. Imma gain some weight, then me and you gonna hangout."

I know someone that lives close by to Stanley, they said he had been gone since before the start of the season, and then they saw him Tuesday walking his dog. One would think, that if all you had to do was lose some weight and get in a little better shape, and you could make a little cash playing a game for 15-20 min a night that you would do it. I saw him outside his place this summer, he is a big dude, and he was not that out of shape. Is he getting paid by any contract right now?

Wrestling? Fake? Oh my God! C'mon, people, wrestling fans know its fake. We're not stupid, just weird.

Big Show ain't 500 lbs and he's only barely 7 feet. Andre was around 6' 10" but, like Big Show, was HUGELY proportioned. Andre was basically more of a circus act than a wrestler; he had serious trouble moving around the ring even in his prime. You may recall that for Wrestlemania 3, Andre had already retired and was essentially waiting to die. His back was too screwed up to allow him to wrestle again. Vince McMahon basically begged him, promising the biggest payday in wrestling history. Andre had around 12 hours of surgery done to his back just for that match, but moving around was still pretty impossible for him. He couldn't even walk all the way from the entrance ramp to the ring, so Wrestlemania had strange carts mocked up to look like little rings lug every wrestler on the show from the back to the ring that night to cover for him. Andre wan't in the greatest mood that night because he knew he had to be slammed on his back in the match's finish. Vince told Bobby Heenan, Andre's manager, to watch him in case he wasn't cooperating. Heenan reportedly said something like, "Sure Vince, I'll watch him. Just like everyone else in the arena will watch him, because nobody can make Andre the Giant do something he doesn't want to do."

On a side note, Andre always knew his medical condition would cause him to die young, and he was determined to have fun while he could. He was often known to drink as many as 100 beers (ONE HUNDRED!) in one sitting. Wow. That's a legend of course, and you can never believe something that wrestlers say, but it's essentially become part of the wrestling apocrypha.

Neither Andre nor Big Show would be able to run an NBA floor more than once, I suspect.
