Those hoping to see the U.S. job market end 2017 on an encouraging note are going to be disappointed.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today that the economy added 148,000 jobs in December, which is down a fair amount from the previous two months, and falls short of expectations. That said, the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%, which is very low.

The revisions from the previous two months were mixed, with October’s totals revised down and November’s totals revised up. Combined, they pointed to a net loss of 9,000 jobs, which adds to the discouraging nature of today’s report.

Providing some additional context, now that we have data for all of the previous calendar year, we can note that the U.S. added 1.84 million jobs in 2011, 2.19 million jobs in 2012, 2.33 million in 2013, 3.11 million in 2014, 2.74 million in 2015, 2.24 million in 2016, and 2.05 million in 2017.

Or put another way, while Donald Trump’s first year as president has been pretty good overall for job creation, Americans nevertheless saw the slowest job growth in six years. (Note, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will revise the 2017 data once more, making the available figures preliminary.)

Above you’ll find the chart I run every month, showing monthly changes in total jobs since the start of the Great Recession. The image makes a distinction: red columns point to monthly changes under the Bush and Trump administrations, while blue columns point to monthly job changes under the Obama administration.

Interesting to note that the phrase "labor participation rate" seems to have slipped from the republican vocabulary. During the Obama years of improving employment the republicans would quickly jump in with a "but, but the labor participation rate is the important metric...". And with trump's first year... well, not much change in labor participation.

Also for completeness, here's the long-term unemployed and discouraged worker stats:

Obviously we are close to full employment so its going to be hard to create jobs, but your glorious leader claimed there was 30% unemployment. To go from 30% to 4% unemployment you need to create more than 2 million jobs. Its the absurdity of the everything he is saying.

For someone who seems on the verrge of "getting it" about our Fraud-in-Chief, you just refuse to allow your head to overrule your heart.

We understand that conservatives really needed a "win" but what you ended up with is an incompetent fraud. Accept it and fix the mistake, don't enable it.

What ever happened to concern over "labor participation rate"? It was pretty important when previous presidents were in the white house... but if anything, the labor participation rate has gone down the last few months (Feb 63.0%, Mar 62.9%, Apr 62.8%, May 62.7%).

Angry? Nowhere have gotten an impression that people are angry in politics these days.
