Yes but the player can waive it to make a deal happen like CP3 did last year and I think Melo too was offering to do that for us but may not have done it with OKC.
If the Mavs are dumb enough to throw max money at Capela I would immediately get Jerry West on the phone to see if a 3-way can be done. Jordan to Houston Capela to Dallas Wes Matthews and JJ Barea and a 2nd Rounder to LA We get Jordan for next year and if it doesn't work out, he comes off the books for next summer. Capela and the Mavs get each other for better or worse. Clippers get a pick just to do business. Matthews and Barea comes off the books next summer, just like Jordan would if he declines his player option.
The question is what team in Texas is he going to. Dallas Houston Or SA...?? I don’t see him going to a team with no chance to contend. I think Capela might be on the way out IMO.
What is max money for Capela? 5 years how much per year? You’re problem with matching that would be contract length I assume?? Not sure why I’d rather have DJ a team $24 million a year than Clint at a similar number other than length. Except Clint is super young. Maybe if just a general statement about not throwing that much money at any center on your squad in this NBA... which I kind of agree with. Still I’d rather match Clint and then trade him later.
Having Capela instead of DeAndre as today is a no brainer in terms of talent/value. I think the only reason why someone could prefer DeAndre is because of their contract in perspective, if Clint is getting a max contract this summer, he's going to get paid around 25/30M per season for the next years, DeAndre might actually resign for a 10/15M per year contract next season, especially here, pretty sure he would give up something to play here. I agree with you btw, still match and eventually trade him later, even though some annoying factors might come in play after you match, he can't be traded for a year without his consent, there might be a trade kicker in the offer sheet he signs, you still can't trade him for a year to the team that signed him, there's no guarantee that going forward you will get good value back for a maxed role player...i mean, there's a reason why we didn't match Parsons at the time, even though that was also a 3-year deal with player option for the last season, which made it basically an expiring contract (couldn't trade him for one year without consent and player option after the second) in trade scenarios.
Don't get me wrong guys--I love Capela. Maybe I'm just looking for a way to be "flexible" with cap space for next summer while also still be able to compete at the same level as last year's team. There's a definite ceiling to Capela's game and seeing potential max cap space in summer of 2020 (The Brow?) is...intriguing....
I just don't see how we will be in play for a max in two years...at that point, Harden will make 40M per year, likely the same for Chris...it's super unlikely if not literally impossible we will be able to sign a max free agent going forward. AD is going to Boston anyway.
I don't think that's possible really. If you're resigning CP3, that's close to $60 million between him and Harden. EG = $14 Tucker = $8 That's 4 guys... I mean I guess you could try and trade pieces for cap space. EG would be on his final year, and Tucker's contract isn't bad. But not really sure if it is that attractive to a potential free agent to be like we've basically gutted our team but have Harden and a 34 year old often injured CP3. PLUS... if you look at the 2019 free agent class, it's not exactly forward heavy, which would be the need, plus the need then to replace center. Certainly teams won't be clamoring to get a Clint Capela with 4 years left at huge money.... BUT... if Clint continues to progress, even if more slowly, and the Rockets make another WCF appearance or so with Clint doing what he does in the playoffs - which those of us that watch every game know is great but also often dependent on lob type passes and diminished against a GSW team - well there's always a way to offload. And in my view, you could actually get back talent. The Clippers didn't really matter. And I "guess" Blake was still viewed more favorably than Clint nationally... but those in the "know" abhorred his contract/skills combo... but I'd absolutely have been ok with that return in a Clint type trade -a Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley pick type thing. Frankly, outside the moonshots (Eg. Lebron), I think a resigned Clint, EVEN at a max, is basically the trade chip the Rockets will have going forward in any effort to get better. Yes, EG could be trade, but I;m not sure he'd get you back a better team. While Clint is HUGELY important in the regular season and against certain playoff teams, in today's NBA if you get weaker at center but improve at other areas, it might make you a better team overall. The Tobias Harris example is great. If I could trade Clint for a Tobias Harris AND feel good about being able to replace Clint with something like a Tyson Chandler or some other center of that mold that clearly isn't as good, or as young, etc. but would give you some minutes... I think that makes the team better against GSW... and that's who you have to beat.
It's great that you brought up Tobias because this thread: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/index.php?threads/i-blue-myself-tobias-harris-anyone.259176/ Is awesome
3/4 of ClutchFans a couple of weeks ago: "DJ will opt out of his final year and sign with the Rockets on the cheap because he loves Houston so much." Of course, he was smart enough to opt in and get the money. Only a moron would turn down $25M when he can just wait one more year and sign with the Rockets for whatever he can get at that point if he still wants to.
Just like Melo, no one is leaving guaranteed money on the table when you can never get close to that amount again.
Yeah would Dallas really do that to themselves again? Would Deandre really do that to himself... I'd rather get traded to the Vipers or the Toros before going to Dallas...
His mom won't allow it. https://abcnews.go.com/Sports/deandre-jordans-round-trip-clips-star-dissed-dallas/story?id=32421877 Plus... the only person that would really had his feelings hurt was Chandler Parsons.
He had trust issues with CP3 but now wants to follow CP3 to Houston? Deep down inside, he know who really butters his bread.
