I want a G5. It's that simple. It'll probably never happen but it's a dream of mine. Question: are there "deals" on Apple computers? Or are they like a Saturn car - one set price. I walked into the Apple store at the Galleria the other day and my wife had to drag me out of there. It was ugly.
It does seem like the price is the price everywhere. Even places like Fry's don't discount the Apple products, in general.
Speaking of Macs...I'm sure the musicians/Mac owners (Jeff) will be happy to see this: http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/
It's interesting they are going into this. Mac's have always been the computer of choice for digital recording. Most of the best recording software has just recently been released for Windows. This sounds like Apple's version of Acid Pro, a very popular loop-based audio system available only for Windows. Ableton Software made an Acid-like program called Live many have said surpasses Acid Pro, but it is $500 and this may be Apple's way of giving customers who don't want to spend big bucks an introduction into this area of multimedia/music. Interesting stuff.
It is hard to get a good break on the price of a Mac. If you shop online you can get a little break (free ram, printer, scanner those sort of things) as well as avoid paying sales tax. Shipping is usually not that bad if you are not in a hurry. I buy all the macs for our company and I never buy local. Check www.macwarehouse.com or www.macmall.com
From what I've read, discounts on the list price of an Apple are unlikely. However, you may find deals where something non-monetary is thrown in. For example, you could find a laptop at CompUSA for the same price as at the Apple Store, but CompUSA throws in a laptop bag. Apple tightly controls the prices their distributors set.
G5, Even though I would much rather buy a PC next time, is making the desicion much much harder. Ofcourse getting money is a whole nother thing
I works part time for a computer re-seller's company, and I have seen Apple dropping price on alot of their stuffs, so you might want to wait for a while before you buy a G5.
I want a G5 badly, but I'm used to working on my Powerbook now, so it'd be hard to give up the portability. Plus I'm building an HTPC at the moment, which is my next project.
if your a student you get an educational discount. Show your college ID. It can be like 15 -20% depending on the model
I started computers using Apples [I still own an Apple IIc - it is SOMEWHERE in the storage] In college I was all about the MACs but reality and the overwhelm PC world infringed now . .. I'm woefully MAC illiterate I want to get back to the Apple world Now that I think About it. . . . my Next Computer maybe a MAc .. . . time to look into it Rocket River need to brush up on alot of MAC Skillz
QUESTION: What is the Major Difference between a G4 and a G5 and would I as a novice user really notice the difference? Rocket River
I will come out of my hole to let you in on a little secret. Apple education customers get great deals. Not just the schools themselves, but everybody associated with schools... in any way at all. They just ask on the website to identify the school that you are affiliated with. So make friends with a school person, fast and get a pretty good discount. That is, if you don't know an Apple employee like I do. he he he Oh and buy the bare minimum RAM with the computer from Apple and get extra RAM from someone else with a lifetime guarantee. Even Apple employees do that. Oh ya and John Mayer rocks.
I was at Steve Jobs' keynote yesterday. Dude, you have no idea. Garage band looks amazing (incidentally, I am posting this from the MacWorld Expo...). The IpodMini's are amazing, too I have been playing with them at the desks, but I think the price is too steep. They are going to chew into their own buyers, rather than eat into anyone else's. Those bad boys should be, like, $179 or $159. $249 is too close to the 15GB IpodMaxi. John Mayer, who I could typically give a rats ass about, was very endearing in how into the program he was. The midi sounds are amazing -- well, some of them. Horns are still garbage, but the bass and guitar are nuts. String noise, everything. Really amazing. For $49, i think it is a revolutionary program. Truly amazing. My music problem and mac problem are about to merge into one large problem. If i could just incorporate the Rockets in somehow, all my problems in one place. This expo is so geeky it is acutally turning me off Macs a little. You know, when it is reasonable people who are into Macs, that is one thing. But seriously, if I hear one person make and laugh at their own joke that is stunningly geeky and not funny, I am going to puke. Makes CF.net look like a haven for fairly balanced andd non-adicted computer users. gotta go to a workshop on video compression. bye.
The main difference is the processor speed. Also I believe G5 will only boot OSX, whereas G4 you can switch between is OS X and classic. Oh and all G5 come standard with Superdrive.
To add a bit to your post: G5 is a 64 bit processor, G4 is 32 bit so the threshhold for Ghz is much higher with the G5. While you are correct in your assessment that a G5 will not boot from OS 9 or and an OS 9 CD, to say that it will not boot Classic may confuse some people since Classic is an emulation application and not an actual operating system. Classic applications scream like everything else on the G5. Sorry if you feel nitpicked, I huess Help Desk never really leaves you once you play that role.
