I'm home last night and I wanted to listen to some Audioslave and "Pink Moon" by Nick Drake when I discovered that this cheap RCA CD player that I bought at Wal-Mart a little over 2 years ago won't play either disc. Naturally, I am pissed - mainly because I got only 2 years out of that player.

So, I got to thinking - wonder how much money I'll need to spend to get a really good player and then it hit me: why do I need a CD player at all when I have a computer?

So, I listened to those 2 discs on the computer last night through the Windows Media Player and they sounded great.

Therefore, the question I have is this one: Is it really essential to have a CD player in the house when you have a PC?

I am thinking that I won't waste my time with another similar type CD player from Wal-Mart and eventually try to get a really nice system. In the meantime, I'll just keep using my computer if I want to listen to stuff.

Every bachelor pad needs a kick ass stereo system. Barry White just doesn't sound the same coming out of puny computer speakers...

You don't need a CD player......but I do recommend an SACD player, a tube amp, and some old Klipsch speakers.

Some CDs with "exclusive content" and stuff won't play on a PC. I can't get my new Kill Bill soundtrack to play on my computer because of the movie trailer vids which automatically pop up. Windows CD-Player, Winamp and Media Player also do not recognize it as an audio CD.

I don't own a CD player any more: I have my DVD player connected to my amp/tuner and whenever I want to listen to CD's or MP3 disks, I just pop 'em into my DVD player (I don't listen to CD's much at all any more - they suck).

About a year ago I bought a 250 gigabyte external hard drive (firewire) to store my music, digital photos, and digital video. I digitized all 350 of our CD's and then put them in a box. I have the computer audio out to the receiver in the home theater system and I never listen to anything but our playlists. I use my ipod in the car so I don't worry about having the right cd with me, I always have the music I want to listen to. The first thing I do when I buy a cd the first thing I do is convert it and then put it away.

I was thinking about selling all my old cd's to buy new music but as of now I don't have a back up of my drive so I think I'll hold off so I don't lose all my music if my drive crashes.

If you do buy another cd player, don't buy a RCA.

That's why you have to buy Klipsch 5.1 computer speakers, like I do. Nothing like 400 watts (and a subwoofer) of pure power blasting from your computer.

Of cousre, I still have my receiver hooked up to my DVD player to blast out 550 watts of pure bass when I listen to classic Snoop.

I've been using my computer as my "stereo" almost exclusively since about '98. With a decent sound card and good speakers it's good enough for my needs. I wouldn't exactly call myself and audiophile, although I enjoy music a lot. I guess my ears just aren't as "picky' as those of some people. And I periodically listen to CDs through the DVD player in the living room as well.

I like my digital music to be played on my Mac with iTunes because i like the random feature its like your own personal jukebox. Other than that I like good old fashioned vinyl. I have pretty much stopped buying CDs, I just buy records and record them to my Mac and add it to my music library.

I just use my DVD player since it has a kick ass surround sound system. Manny.... you don't have a DVD player do you.
Well in that case maybe you can toss the CD's to Jake like frisbees.

No, moe, but a DVD player is the next thing I need to obtain.

LOL about the Jake reference. I am going to go ahead and announce that you have won the tourney - actual results be damned!:D
