Does Reid Ryan have a different role? I thought he was president of player operations but maybe he’s just club president.

Reid Ryan is over the business and PR side of operations, has no role in the on field product.

Keeping Luhnow was obviously a no brainier, was concerned somebody else would swoop in and buy him away from us with a huge offer. This is certainly great news.

Ryan's title is President of Business Operations. It doesn't appear that we had a President of Baseball Operations before today. Glad to lock Luhnow up.

So my stab at the reason for the new title. GM's under contract can leave for a promotion, this way there's no promotion to be had, so he is locked up no questions asked.

Here's a new title and more money. Your job responsibilities remain the same.

I wonder if they will name a GM? Part of the new title could be to give a promotion to somebody the organization is afraid of losing (presumably Elias).

    Thank you, St. Lous!
I thought it could be everything from Exxtending Hinch, Tucker call up, using rainbow uniforms in over 40% of the games, to super rockstar Julia moving to the booth. Astros knows suspense.

The highest paid make 2-3 million, so I'm guessing he makes 3 million now. Which is an almost comical bargain when you think about his importance.

Not sure if this is 100% accurate. I was under impression team had to give consent. That said, not sure if Astros want a reputation of denying a person's ability to move up unless he has baseball talent.

Jeff Luhnow is a consummate professional and I hope he retires an Astro.

Luhnow said he would be willing to give up the GM position if it means keeping someone from being poached to become a major league GM somewhere else. I imagine this is very likely to happen with Mike Elias. I think it’s only a matter of time before he gets a chance to be a GM. And this is a great way for him to have that chance while retaining him.

That's because Luhnow wants to win over and over again.

I have a feeling he was angling for this earlier to try and keep Stearns but now will do. I'm expecting Elias to be promoted soon and it will be a Cubs like structure a la Theo/Hoyer.
