Sorry about the hounding but most of your debunking points were off-base and I was just participating in the debate on behalf of the story which I found very interesting. There was enough in it, for example the Rox beating the T-wolves at home 101-97 or a security guard so blithely waving in a stranger just because he can't understand her, to tell me that it was fiction. Though the points you chose to debunk it on,t hat it seems improbable that Vietnamese refugees would come to Houston, belies the fact that many have and there is a huge Vietnamese refugee community in Houston. One that I'm willing to guess is larger than than the one in SF. Yonkers. You're correct that most of the ethnic Chinese in Vietnam were not Mandarin speakers but many have learned Mandarin as it has become a common tongue for Chinese everywhere. I was in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia this summer and all of the ethnic Chinese I met could speak at least some Mandarin.
That was kinda cool, kinda sweet--- well I liked it anyways, but does she pick-up Yao or Turbo? I'm a little confused.
Max Apple is former Rice University professor, a pretty well known author, and a life long Rockets fan. This is just short story, and that's all that it is. It's called fiction.
